About Blakeney
I’ll never forget the drive to Blakeney that Friday afternoon – sat nav insisting we were nearly there, only for us to take a wrong turn down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a field full of very unimpressed cows. Cue a 20-point turn in the drizzle, with me muttering about my legendary sense of direction while my other half stifled giggles. But as we finally crested the hill, hearts lifted: there it was, this gorgeous all-ground-floor apartment tucked into a converted Georgian coach house, just moments from Lydney’s buzz. Hillside spot with views that stretched over patchwork countryside and the twinkling town below – proper idyllic, like stepping into a postcard. Private entrance, off-road parking, and inside, elegant furnishings with every self-catering gadget you could dream of. First impressions? Blown away. Felt like the perfect bolthole for our little group.

We’d barely unpacked when we wandered down to Blakeney’s high street, anticipation bubbling for what the Forest of Dean had in store. Didn’t take long to meet our first character: old Bert at the village shop, sporting a flat cap that must’ve been glued on since the war. “You lot from up country?” he eyed us suspiciously over his paper, before launching into a yarn about the time a fox nicked his prize marrow from the allotments. We chuckled, bought some local cider (his recommendation, naturally), and he waved us off with, “Mind the otters in the Wye – cheeky buggers, they are!” Proper welcome, that.

Next day, strolling along the Severn Way trail – just a short hop from the door – we bumped into Madge, a wiry pensioner power-walking with her terrier, Percy. She clocked our map and declared, “Lost already? Follow me, loves!” Turned out she’d lived here 50 years, knew every hidden cove. Over a bench chat, she regaled us with tales of Blakeney’s smuggling heyday – “Me grandad hid barrels in the churchyard, swore blind to the vicar!” Percy yapped approval, and we swapped numbers for her famous flapjack recipe. Made the walk unforgettable.

Evenings were gold. At the local pub, The Larrup Buc, we got chatting to Dave, the barman with a beard like a bramble hedge and stories for days. “Heard you’re in that coach house spot,” he grinned, pulling pints. “Best views in Blakeney – but watch for the owls at night; they’ll have you thinking it’s Hitchcock!” We laughed about his run-in with a wayward deer that gatecrashed the beer garden last summer. Proper characters, these locals – warm, wry, full of that gentle Forest humour that pulls you in.

Reflecting now, sat back home with a cuppa, it hits me: holidays aren’t just about the views (stunning as they were) or the cosy apartment setup. It’s the people – Bert’s cider wisdom, Madge’s trailside tales, Dave’s pint-side banter – that etched Blakeney into my heart. Left us relaxed, full of laughs, and plotting a return. If you’re after a getaway that feels like chatting with mates by the fire, this neck of the woods delivers.
