About Blakeney
I’ll never forget the drive to Blakeney – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Norwich turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d set off full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav chirping away, but then the heavens opened just past Aylsham. Rain hammered the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and in the chaos, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that felt more like a sheep track than a road. Cue the missus yelling “Watch the hedge!” as branches scraped the car, and me pretending I knew exactly where I was. By the time we crawled into Blakeney, we were soaked, arguing over whose fault it was, and desperately needing a cuppa. But honestly, that little mishap made the arrival all the sweeter – like the universe’s way of building anticipation.

Pulling up to the house, my heart did a little flip. There it was, this cracking modern detached place, all brick and flint, sitting pretty with the most massive south-facing garden stretching out like an invitation to flop down with a GandT. And those sea views? Tempting doesn’t even cover it – the North Sea sparkling away in the distance, seals probably bobbing about down on the point. It’s just a hop from the coastal path and the quayside, that postcard-perfect village hub with its bobbing boats and crab pots stacked high. First impressions? Blown away. We tumbled inside, dripping puddles everywhere, and it was love at first step – three en-suite bedrooms ready for us to claim, airy spaces that felt like home but way posher, perfect for our little family crew.

We dumped the bags and straight out into that garden, the rain finally easing to let the sun peek through. Kids legged it to the fence for a proper gawp at the view, while I cracked open a bottle of fizz we’d smuggled in. The anticipation from the drive melted away; this was proper Norfolk magic. A quick wander down to the quay had us scoffing fish and chips from the hut, watching the world go by – seals barking on the bar, boats chugging out for the evening catch. Back at the house, we fired up the barbecue in the garden, plates piled with local crab (picked up fresh from a bloke on the harbour) and new potatoes, the sea breeze carrying that salty tang right to us.

Looking back, that soggy arrival was a gift, really. It made me stop and reflect – we’re all rushing about life, aren’t we? But here, in this gem of a spot in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, everything slows down. No signal stress, just us, the waves, and the joy of doing nowt but breathe it in. We spent the next days ambling the coastal path to Cley, spotting avocets in the marshes, popping into the NT café for cream teas, and even hiring bikes to pootle along the quiet lanes. The house was the perfect base – cosy evenings with board games, waking to dawn chorus and those views. If you’re after a holiday that resets the soul, Blakeney’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return, mishaps and all.
