Exploring Norfolk
I’ve just come back from the most magical week in a luxury holiday cottage in Norfolk, and blimey, the autumn season turned it into something straight out of a cosy novel. Picture this: golden leaves carpeting the flint-walled lanes, crisp mornings with that invigorating chill that makes your cheeks glow, and the North Sea whispering secrets along empty beaches. We booked this gem near Blakeney, a proper high-end spot with underfloor heating, a wood-burning stove, and views over the salt marshes that had me glued to the floor-to-ceiling windows from dawn till dusk.

Autumn in Norfolk is all about that mellow magic, isn’t it? No summer crowds trampling the dunes at Holkham Beach—just us and a scattering of dog-walkers, kicking through the dunes as the weak sun filtered through the clouds. We’d wrap up in scarves and wellies for a bracing coastal ramble, the wind whipping up seals barking from Blakeney Point. One afternoon, I tried to look all intrepid, striding ahead like a proper explorer, only to trip over a tussock and end up face-first in the sand. My other half couldn’t stop laughing—serves me right for pretending I’m Bear Grylls after one too many mulled ciders at the local pub.

The cottage itself was a haven against the seasonal shift. Mornings started with steaming porridge by the Aga, watching mist roll off the marshes like a scene from a David Attenborough doc. We’d venture out to Cley-next-the-Sea for fresh crab from the smokehouse—autumn’s bounty means the seafood’s at its sweetest, no summer heat spoiling it. Evenings were pure bliss: firing up the stove, cracking open a bottle of red, and tucking into a roast with veg from a nearby farm shop. The changing light painted everything in amber hues; sunsets over the Broads were so vivid, they made my Instagram feed look rubbish by comparison.

But honestly, staying there in autumn prompted a bit of gentle navel-gazing. Summer holidays are all go-go-go, but this time of year slows you right down. Sat on the terrace one evening, wrapped in a blanket as the sky bruised purple, I reflected on how we rush through life like it’s perpetual high season. Norfolk’s quiet season reminded me to savour the in-betweens—the rustle of leaves, the smoky scent of bonfires from distant fields. It’s not glamorous like a heatwave barbecue, but there’s a deeper comfort in it, like pulling on your favourite jumper.

We even squeezed in a seal trip from Morston Quay, the boat rocking gently on choppy autumn waves, pups frolicking as the days shortened. Back at the cottage, stargazing from the hot tub felt otherworldly—no light pollution, just the Milky Way popping against the ink-black sky. Norfolk in autumn isn’t about blockbuster adventures; it’s the subtle seasonal shifts that make a luxury stay unforgettable. If you’re after proper recharge, ditch peak summer—head there now, before winter claims it. I’m already plotting a return.
