Exploring Norfolk
I finally made it to our little holiday cottage in Norfolk after what felt like the world's most disorganised road trip. Picture this: me, my other half Sarah, and our two sprogs crammed into the car with suitcases teetering like a Jenga tower, the sat-nav insisting we turn left into a field (cheers, Google Maps), and the heavens opening just as we crossed the Suffolk border. By the time we trundled down that narrow lane towards the coast near Wells-next-the-Sea, we were soaked, sniping at each other, and the boot had sprung open twice, scattering wellies and a rogue picnic hamper across the verge. Classic us – arriving in chaos is basically our family trademark.

Pulling up to the cottage, though, was like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It was one of those proper Norfolk flint cottages, all wonky beams and ivy-clinging walls, hunkered down in a quiet spot with nothing but marshland views and the distant cry of seals. The estate agent had promised "peaceful rural idyll," but as we piled out, mud splattering our trainers, a cheeky pheasant shot across the drive like it owned the place. I fumbled the keys – naturally – dropping them into a puddle, which had us all in hysterics. "Welcome home, you pillocks," Sarah laughed, fishing them out.

Inside, first impressions were a whirlwind of charm and "oh blimey" moments. The sitting room screamed cosy: a wood-burner begging for a fire, squashy sofas draped in tartan throws, and windows framing the endless flats stretching to Holkham Beach. But then the mishaps kicked in proper. The kids dashed upstairs to claim bedrooms, only for little Evie to yell that hers had a "haunted" sloping ceiling she couldn't stand up in without bonking her head. Cue me clambering up a ladder (why was there a ladder?) to check the loft hatch, convinced we'd booked next to a bat colony. Turned out it was just ancient spiderwebs and a forgotten cricket bat – phew. Meanwhile, I tried brewing a cuppa in the kitchen, but the kettle fused the socket with a spectacular pop. Nothing says "holiday vibes" like resetting the trip switch while cursing under your breath.

As the rain eased and we cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider on the patio, watching the sun dip over the salt marshes, I had one of those gentle what-am-I-doing-with-my-life pauses. Here we were, bickering over Wi-Fi signal (spotty as a dalmatian) and battling the elements, yet it felt utterly right. These little cottage quirks – the creaky floorboards that sound like a ghost waltz, the sea breeze sneaking through ill-fitting windows – they're what make it real, aren't they? No sterile hotel lobby, just us lot making memories amid the mayhem.

By bedtime, with the kids conked out and Sarah snoring softly, I sat by that wood-burner (safely lit, mind), gazing at the stars popping out over the dark Broads. Arrival pandemonium aside, this Norfolk nook had us hooked already. Can't wait to explore the dunes tomorrow – if we don't get lost again first.
