We’d barely turned off the main road when the satnav decided to have a little joke at our expense. Inside, everything felt instantly welcoming. The low ceilings and thick walls kept the place cool despite the afternoon sun, and someone had left a jar of local honey on the side with a note saying “help yourselves.” We kicked off our shoes, claimed the squashy sofas, and spent the first half-hour simply listening to the quiet—no traffic, just the occasional gull and the distant rush of waves.

That first evening we wandered down the short path to the beach, wellies swapped for bare feet. The tide was out, leaving long stretches of damp sand perfect for collecting shells and drawing rude pictures with sticks. We stayed until the light turned soft and gold, then trudged back with sandy pockets and the promise of fish and chips from the little shop a short walk away.

Back at the cottage the children claimed the top bunks while we unpacked just enough to feel at home: tea bags, a couple of books, and the emergency chocolate we always pretend is for emergencies. Sitting on the small patio with a cuppa, I found myself thinking how rarely we actually stop like this—no plans, no screens, just the sound of the sea and the occasional argument over whose turn it was to choose the playlist. It felt both ordinary and oddly special, the sort of simple reset that sneaks up on you when you least expect it.

By the time we turned in, the mishap on the lane already felt like part of the story rather than a hiccup, and I realised that sometimes getting slightly lost is exactly how you find the place you needed all along.
