About Norfolk
We’d planned a proper first-afternoon wander along the coast path toward Cromer, but by the time we’d changed into shorts the sky had turned that familiar Norfolk pewter. A few fat drops spattered the patio table, so we grabbed waterproofs and set off anyway, telling ourselves it was “atmospheric.” The path was springy underfoot, edged with cow parsley and the odd brave poppy, and we could hear the sea hissing below even though we couldn’t yet see it. Within ten minutes the rain had stopped, the clouds had parted, and steam was rising from the warm tarmac in little curls—classic British weather showing off. We followed the trail down a zig-zag of wooden steps to the shingle, shoes in hand, toes sinking into the surprisingly warm stones. The tide was out far enough to reveal stretches of ridged sand perfect for an impromptu game of barefoot cricket with a bit of driftwood. Further along, families were flying kites in the sudden sunshine, and we paused to watch a cormorant drying its wings on a half-submerged post. Every so often the wind would carry the scent of frying chips from the caravan park café a short stroll inland, making our stomachs rumble. By the time we climbed back up the cliff the light had turned golden and the cottage windows glowed invitingly. We kicked off sandy shoes at the door, made tea in mismatched mugs, and sat on the little bench outside while a blackbird sang from the roof. Sitting there, still slightly damp and definitely underfed, I realised how rarely we slow down enough to let a single afternoon stretch and change like this. The cottage felt like the perfect base for exactly that sort of unhurried coastal rambling—no grand plans, just the path, the weather, and whatever came next. |
