Exploring Norfolk
Just got back from a cracking week in a luxury holiday cottage in Norfolk, and blimey, the autumn timing made it pure magic. I’d booked this posh pad near Burnham Market – think thatched roof, wood-burning stove, and views over the salt marshes that scream Norfolk Broads postcard. But it was the crisp October chill that turned it from nice to unforgettable. Summer crowds? Forgotten. Instead, we had the place to ourselves, wrapped in golden light and that fresh, briny sea air that nips at your cheeks.

Mornings started with mist rolling in off the North Sea, turning the garden into a proper ethereal wonderland. I’d brew a pot of proper builder’s tea on the Aga (fancy cottages always have one), then step out for a wander along the coastal path to Holkham Beach. In autumn, it’s not the sweaty trek of July; it’s invigorating, with dunes dusted in copper leaves and seals barking from the mudflats. We crunched through fallen crab apples, me feeling all poetic about the turning seasons – a rare moment of zen for a city lad who usually forgets to water his houseplants. Gentle self-reflection, eh? Realised I spend too much time glued to screens; out there, with the wind whipping up, you can’t help but breathe deeper.

Afternoons were for cosy indulgence, courtesy of the season’s embrace. The cottage’s library nook became our HQ, fires crackling as we scoffed on local treats: samphire from Brancaster, washed down with Adnams ale. No sticky heat forcing you outdoors – autumn let us luxuriate inside, playing board games till dusk. One evening, we drove to Blakeney for crab fresh off the boat. The sky was that dramatic Norfolk grey, threatening rain, but it held off just long enough for us to watch the sunset bleed pink over the quay. Laughed our socks off when I slipped on wet seaweed – classic me, graceless as ever. “You’re a liability, mate,” my other half chuckled. Fair play.

Evenings? Pure bliss. The cottage’s hot tub, steaming under a canopy of stars you’d never see in London’s glow. Autumn’s clear, cold nights made the Milky Way pop, and we’d bubble away, gin in hand, plotting nothing. No rush, no itineraries – the season slowed us right down. I reflected there, toes pruning, on how we’d been chasing summer vibes for years, but this quiet luxury, wrapped in woollies and woodsmoke, felt richer. Norfolk in leaf-fall isn’t showy; it’s honest, restorative.

By week’s end, as frost etched the cottage windows, I didn’t want to leave. That seasonal shift – from green abundance to amber hush – shaped every laugh, every sigh. If you’re pondering a Norfolk getaway, ditch peak summer. Go autumnal. It’ll recharge your soul like nothing else. Cheers to that.
