Exploring Norfolk
I’ve just got back from the most gloriously lazy week in a holiday cottage in Norfolk, and honestly, it’s made me wonder why I ever bother rushing about in life. Tucked away down a quiet lane near the North Norfolk coast, this place was pure bliss – a cosy 18th-century thatched cottage with roses rambling over the walls and a garden that felt like it was made for doing absolutely nothing in.

From the moment we arrived, the plan was simple: sod the sightseeing, we were here to switch off. The first morning, I shuffled out to the garden with a cuppa, plonked myself in a creaky wicker chair under the apple tree, and that was me sorted for hours. Norfolk’s big skies stretched out endlessly, with just the odd lapwing wheeling overhead and the distant bleat of sheep. No agenda, no alarms – just the sun warming my face and the pages of my battered paperback fluttering in the breeze. I must’ve read three chapters of some daft detective novel before nodding off, waking up with a start when a cheeky robin dive-bombed the bird table. Proper comedy gold, that bird – like it owned the place.

Laziness levelled up in the afternoons. We’d wander (very slowly) to the garden’s wildflower patch, where bees buzzed about like they were on a sugar rush, then flop onto blankets with a picnic of local cheeses, crusty bread from the village shop, and a flask of tea. No grand barbecues or fancy meals; just grazing and gazing at the clouds morphing into dragons and elephants. One day, I swear I spent four hours flat on my back, tracing patterns in the sky. Pathetic? Maybe, but it felt revolutionary. Back home, I’m always chasing the next thing – emails, errands, the lot. Here, time stretched like toffee, and I realised how knackered I’ve been without even knowing it.

Evenings were for the cottage’s snug sitting room, fairy lights twinkling over the beams, with a log fire crackling if the sea breeze turned nippy. I’d curl up on the squishy sofa with another book – this time a proper doorstopper about Norfolk marshes – while rain pattered on the windows. No telly, no scrolling; just the joy of a page-turner and the occasional “ooh, listen to that wind!” to my other half. We laughed about how we’d planned to cycle the coastal path or visit a stately home, but who needs that when the garden’s your own private paradise?

Looking back, that week of deliberate idleness was the best recharge ever. Norfolk’s got its Broads and beaches, sure, but the real magic’s in these hidden cottages, where slowing down feels like the ultimate luxury. If you’re knackered from life’s treadmill, book one – and promise me you’ll embrace the art of bugger all. I’m already plotting a return.
