Exploring Norfolk
First morning, mug of builder’s tea in hand, I grabbed the Ordnance Survey map (none of that sat-nav nonsense here) and set off on the bike the owner had left in the shed. Aimed for a vague “nice walk” signposted near Potter Heigham, but within ten minutes, I’d veered onto some unmarked lane flanked by drainage ditches. Lost? Utterly. Reward? A hidden boardwalk snaking through How Hill’s secret marshes. No crowds, just otters popping up like cheeky Jack-in-the-boxes and bitterns booming away. I sat on a weathered bench, munching a squashed pork pie from my rucksack, thinking, “Blimey, this is what holidays are for—ditching the plan and letting Norfolk do its thing.” Gentle self-reflection moment: I’m usually a list-tickler, but getting lost taught me to loosen up; life’s too short for Google Maps dictating the fun. Afternoon took a daft turn when hunger struck. Instead of heading back, I pedalled deeper into the lanes, past deserted farms with wonky weatherboard barns. Ended up in a blink-and-you-miss-it hamlet called Thurne, where a weathered sign pointed to “pop-up café—fresh crab today.” Hidden gem alert! It was basically a garden shed run by a cheery local with a cooler full of Cromer crab straight off the boat. Devoured it with crusty bread and a dollop of mayo, chatting to a passing narrowboat skipper about the best spots for spotting swallowtail butterflies. Pure serendipity—no TripAdvisor review could top that. Come evening, dusk had me wandering again, this time on foot towards the River Thurne. Tripped over (literally) a secluded dyke-side pub called The Locks Inn, invisible from the main road. Pint of Adnams pulled by a barman who knew every smuggler’s tale from the 1800s, and a plate of samphire foraged that morning. Laughed my socks off when he confessed to once getting lost himself chasing a rogue cow across the marshes. Back at the cottage, fire crackling, I reflected again: in our rush-rush world, we forget how brilliant it is to surrender to the unknown. Norfolk’s quiet corners healed my inner control freak. That’s the joy of these off-piste jaunts—accidental discoveries that stick with you. If you’re after postcard perfection, stick to the tourist traps. But for soul-recharging bliss? Book a Norfolk cottage, ditch the map, and get lost. You won’t regret it. |
