Exploring Norfolk
I finally made it to our little holiday cottage in Norfolk after what felt like the Great Escape from London traffic. Picture this: me, arms full of Tesco bags bulging with crisps, wine, and enough cheese to sink a barge, fumbling with the wonky gate latch while the dog – bless her excitable paws – decides it's the perfect moment to chase a pheasant right into the hedge. Norfolk's got that flat, endless sky thing going on, all big and brooding, but as I wrestled the key into the lock (why do these old cottages always have keys the size of a house brick?), I was already questioning my life choices. Why didn't I just book a Travelodge?

The cottage was one of those classic flint-and-brick numbers tucked away near the North Norfolk coast, probably a stone's throw from Cromer – you know, the crab capital. We'd picked it online for the "cosy charm" and sea views, but arriving in the pouring rain, with the SatNav cheerfully announcing we'd overshot by two miles, it felt more like a scene from a Carry On film. I dumped the bags in the porch, only for one to split open, sending a rogue cucumber rolling triumphantly down the path like it was auditioning for a vegetable Olympics. Inside, the first impressions hit like a warm hug mixed with a faint whiff of damp dog and woodsmoke. Exposed beams overhead, a Rayburn cooker that looked like it'd seen the Blitz, and a sofa so squashy I half-expected it to swallow me whole.

Stumbling into the kitchen, I knocked over a vase of dried lavender – classic me, turning arrival into a demolition derby. But honestly, as I mopped up the mess with a tea towel printed with Norfolk Broads maps, I had one of those gentle "aha" moments. Back home, life's all rush and deadlines; here, even the chaos felt... unhurried. The windows framed fields of oilseed rape glowing yellow under the clearing skies, and in the distance, the glint of the North Sea. I cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider (local tipple, naturally) and just sat there, grinning at the dog's muddy paw prints on the flagstone floor. Mishaps and all, this place was already working its magic.

Wandering out to the garden as the rain eased, I spotted the bird table alive with robins and those cheeky Norfolk blackbirds, and a weathered bench overlooking a dyke that probably led to the salt marshes. First impressions? A bit bonkers, utterly authentic, and screaming "relax, you overpacked worrier." The kids weren't due till tomorrow, so I claimed the best armchair by the Aga, feet up, plotting crab claws from Sheringham tomorrow. Who needs smooth arrivals when the real joy's in the joyful muddle? Norfolk, you've got me hooked already.
