Exploring Norfolk
Just got back from an absolute cracker of a week in a cosy holiday cottage in Norfolk, and blimey, what a rollercoaster of walks and weather it was. Picture this: a quaint thatched number tucked away near the North Norfolk Coast Path, with creaky wooden floors, a wood-burning stove, and views over endless marshy fields. I’d booked it for some proper rambling – you know, that British obsession with trudging through the countryside come rain or shine. Spoiler: it was mostly the former.

Day one dawned bright and breezy, perfect for a stomp along the Holkham Beach stretch. Miles of golden sands, pinewoods whispering in the wind, and not a soul in sight. I packed a flask of tea, layered up like an onion, and set off feeling like a proper explorer. The beach felt endless, waves crashing like they were auditioning for a Bond film. But Norfolk being Norfolk, by lunchtime the sky turned moody. A sneaky sea mist rolled in, turning my triumphant hike into a squelchy navigation challenge. I ended up drenched, laughing at myself as I stumbled back to the cottage, sand in my socks and tea long gone cold. Lesson one in self-reflection: never trust a Norfolk forecast further than you can spit.

Undeterred, I laced up for the next adventure – a circuit around Blakeney Point. This one’s a classic: seal-spotting territory with shingle paths winding through saltmarshes. The sun even peeked out, turning the whole scene into a watery wonderland. Herons flapping lazily overhead, seals barking like overexcited labradors in the distance. I was in my element, snapping dodgy photos on my phone and pretending I was David Attenborough. But oh, the weather gods had a chuckle. Midway, the heavens opened – proper Norfolk deluge, the kind that soaks you to the marrow in seconds. Plans for a leisurely pub lunch in Cley? Scrubbed. Instead, I hunkered down under a windswept scrub bush, munching a soggy sandwich and pondering life’s big questions. Like, why do I always forget the waterproof trousers?

By midweek, I’d adapted. The cottage became my damp-weather HQ: drying boots by the Aga, plotting routes on Ordnance Survey maps over mugs of builder’s tea. One epic yomp took me inland along the River Glaven, past flinty churches and buzzing bee orchids. Started drizzly, escalated to horizontal rain battering the hood of my cagoule. I cut it short, diverting to a farm shop for pasties that tasted like victory. Gentle self-reflection moment number two: holidays like this remind you that the best adventures aren’t the flawless Instagram ones. They’re the messy, muddy ones where you embrace the chaos – Norfolk’s unpredictable charm in a nutshell.

We wrapped with a calmer jaunt on the coastal path to Weybourne, mist clearing just enough for a proper sunset over the North Sea. Back at the cottage, cosy as you like, I raised a glass to the week’s weather whims. If you’re after hikes that test your mettle and stories to bore your mates with, this is the spot. Norfolk, you legend – I’ll be back for more.
