Exploring Norfolk
I finally made it to our little holiday cottage in Norfolk after what felt like the world's most disorganised road trip. Picture this: me, my other half Sarah, and our two sprogs crammed into the car with suitcases teetering like a game of Tetris gone wrong. We'd set off from London full of beans, dreaming of crisp Broads air and lazy afternoons by the coast. But no, first the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and rerouted us through every tractor-lined lane in East Anglia. Then, as we trundled into the sleepy village of Wroxham – right on the edge of the Norfolk Broads – I took a "shortcut" that turned out to be a single-track muddle with a ditch on one side and a herd of curious cows on the other. Sarah's white-knuckled grip on the dashboard said it all. "This better have a decent kettle," she muttered.

We pulled up to the cottage – a proper chocolate-box job, all wonky beams, ivy-clad walls, and a thatched roof that screamed "cosy rural idyll." It was one of those self-catering gems you find on Airbnb, tucked away down a leafy lane with a garden backing onto a reed-fringed dyke. First impressions? Chaos incarnate. I fumbled the keys from the lockbox (hidden under a flowerpot, naturally), only to drop them straight into a puddle. Brilliant start. Inside, the place was a hug of homeliness: flagstone floors, a wood-burner begging for logs, and a kitchen kitted out with every gadget short of a sous-vide machine. But oh, the unpacking pandemonium. Bags exploded everywhere, the kids immediately claimed the squishy sofa for a wrestling match, and I managed to spill half a pint of milk while hunting for the fridge. Sarah shot me that look – the one that says, "This is why we can't have nice things."

As the kettle whistled (praise be, it worked), I stepped out to the garden for a breather. The sun was dipping low over the Broads, turning the water golden, with a heron doing its best statue impression in the distance. That's when it hit me – gentle self-reflection moment number one. Here I was, knee-deep in domestic disaster, yet utterly content. We'd escaped the grind, and these little mishaps? They're the glue of family holidays, aren't they? Remind you life's not about flawless arrivals but the stories you spin over fish and chips later.

The kids, meanwhile, had discovered the board games in the cupboard and were already plotting a Monopoly takeover. Sarah unpacked the Prosecco with a grin. First impressions might've been a farce – from the cow-dodging drive to my milk-based blooper – but this Norfolk nook had us hooked. The scent of damp earth and woodsmoke wafted in, promising boat trips on the Bure tomorrow and sandy romps at nearby Horsey Beach. Who needs smooth sailing when you've got this kind of magic? I plonked down with a cuppa, surveyed the glorious mess, and thought: yeah, this is holiday bliss.
