Exploring Norfolk
I finally made it to our little holiday cottage in Norfolk after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive from London. Picture this: me, my partner Sarah, our two kids under five, and the dog, all crammed into the car with suitcases teetering like a game of Tetris gone wrong. Satnav decided to have a mid-journey meltdown somewhere near King's Lynn, rerouting us through every tractor-lined lane in East Anglia. By the time we spotted the thatched roof of Willow Cottage peeking over the hedgerows in a sleepy village near Burnham Market, I was knackered, and the kids were chanting "Are we there yet?" on loop.

Pulling up the gravel drive was pure comedy. The gate wouldn't latch properly – classic Norfolk rusticity – so I wrestled it shut while the dog bolted out, straight into a patch of nettles. Yelps all round, followed by me hopping about like an idiot trying to soothe him with dock leaves. Sarah's laughing so hard she's doubled over unpacking the boot, and that's when the first raindrop hits. Not a gentle drizzle, mind, but proper Norfolk horizontal stuff that soaks us in seconds. We dash inside, arms full of dripping bags, only to find the key's hidden under a flowerpot that's been upended by – you guessed it – the wind.

Stumbling through the low-beamed door, we're hit with that instant cottage magic. The place is a proper gem: flagstone floors, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, and mismatched armchairs that scream "cosy night in". First impressions? Bloody brilliant, despite the chaos. The kitchen's stocked with local treats – a welcome basket of Norfolk fudge, fresh eggs from nearby chickens, and a bottle of Adnams ale that I crack open pronto. Kids are already raiding the Rayburn for biscuits, leaving crumbs everywhere. I pause for a sec, wiping rain from my specs, thinking how these mishaps are what make it all real. No five-star polish here; just us, muddied and merry.

Wandering the garden – well, squelching, more like – I spot the wildflower meadow rolling down to a lazy stretch of the River Burn nearby. Typical Norfolk bliss: big skies, reed beds rustling, and that fresh, briny tang from the coast just a few miles off at Holkham Beach. Sarah points out a heron fishing in the shallows, and the kids are transfixed, forgetting their post-drive grumps. Me? I'm reflecting on how I always pack too much – why did I bring three pairs of wellies when one soggy pair does the job? Lightens the soul, these daft moments.

As the rain eases to a misty haze, we fire up the stove, and the cottage wraps us in its glow. First evening's a triumph: simple pasta with those eggs, tales of our epic arrival, and plans for tomorrow's beachcombing. Norfolk's got me hooked already – chaos and all. Can't wait to see what else this beauty throws at us.
