Exploring Norfolk
From the off, it was pure relaxed family bliss, the kind where chaos meets charm. Arriving late afternoon, we piled in with sandy wellies from a spontaneous beach dash at Holkham – those vast, empty sands are magic, aren't they? The kids immediately claimed the garden, which had this massive trampoline and a wood-fired hot tub that became our evening ritual. Dinner was a faff: I heroically attempted Norfolk crab linguine (fresh from a bloke at the quay), but ended up with pasta everywhere and the youngest declaring it "slimy alien food". Laughs all round, and we polished off fish and chips from Wells-next-the-Sea instead. Cottage life, eh? It's all about those gloriously messy moments. Days blurred into simple pleasures. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the Aga – proper bacon baps with local sausages from the butcher in Blakeney. Then we'd mooch off seal-spotting at Blakeney Point, tramping along the salt marshes with binoculars, the boys shrieking at every grey blob that might've been a seal (or a rock). One afternoon, we hired bikes and pedalled through the lanes to Cley Marshes, stopping for cream teas at a thatched café. The light there is unreal – big skies, endless horizons. I had one of those quiet dad moments watching the lads chase kites on the beach: feels like yesterday they were toddlers, now they're leggy whirlwinds. Makes you realise how these breaks stitch us back together. Evenings were for unwinding. We'd fire up the outdoor pizza oven (genius feature), scoff wood-smoked pies under fairy lights, then bubble in the hot tub while swapping rubbish jokes. The cottage had board games galore, so Monopoly nights descended into hilarious cheating scandals – the in-laws are ruthless! One night, a power cut hit, plunging us into candlelight. No Netflix panic; we just roasted marshmallows on the fire pit and told ghost stories. Pure joy. Norfolk's got that unhurried magic – no theme parks, just nature's playground. We nipped to the Thursford Collection for a kitschy tractor ride (kids loved it, I pretended to), and wandered Cromer's pier for candy floss and arcade wins. But the real highlight? Doing nowt. Lounging with a GandT, listening to lapwings, feeling properly unplugged. Heading home, the car was a tip of sandy towels and crisp packets, but our tanks were full. If you're after family downtime with a luxury twist, snag a Norfolk cottage. It's chaos, it's calm, it's everything. Can't wait for the next one. |
