Exploring Norfolk
Just got back from an absolute belter of a week in a cosy holiday cottage in north Norfolk, and blimey, what a rollercoaster of walks and weather it was. Picture this: a quaint stone cottage tucked away near Blakeney, with creaky wooden floors, a wood-burning stove, and windows framing those endless marshy horizons. I’d booked it for some proper downtime, armed with Ordnance Survey maps and a battered pair of wellies, dreaming of epic coastal rambles. Little did I know the British weather had other ideas – it’s like Norfolk’s skies have a mischievous sense of humour, flipping from sun-drenched bliss to biblical downpours in the blink of an eye.

Day one dawned crisp and golden, perfect for the Norfolk Coast Path from Cley-next-the-Sea. I set off striding past reed beds alive with birdsong, seals barking from Blakeney Point like cheeky hecklers at a comedy gig. The wind whipped my cheeks pink, but the views over the salt marshes were pure magic – big skies, shimmering creeks, and not a soul in sight. I felt like the king of the fens, pausing for a flask of tea and a sneaky flapjack, reflecting on how I never make time for this at home. Work’s always nagging, innit? But out here, with the waves crashing and gulls wheeling overhead, it all fades away.

Come afternoon, the weather gods chuckled and unleashed the clouds. What started as a light drizzle turned into a full-on squall, turning the path into a muddy skidpan. I hunkered down under a windswept tree, hood up, laughing at myself – me, the fair-weather walker who’d forgotten a proper waterproof. Plans for a jaunt to Weybourne Beach? Scrubbed. Instead, I squelched back to the cottage, where the Aga welcomed me with open arms and a bubbling stew. Sat by the fire that evening, nursing a pint of Adnams, I pondered how these curveballs make the best stories. No Instagram-perfect hike, but a proper adventure that tested my grit.

Next day, redemption: blue skies again! I tackled the inland trails around Holt, weaving through pinewoods and heathland at Pretty Corner. The sun filtered through the trees, turning dew-kissed bracken into sparkles, and I spotted deer bounding off like they owned the place. But true to form, by lunch the heavens opened once more, forcing an impromptu detour to a tea room in Cromer for crab sandwiches and crabby gossip with locals. “Typical Norfolk, love,” they said with a wink. “Two seasons in one day.”

By week’s end, I’d clocked miles of squelchy paths, dodged more rain than a duck, and rediscovered that childlike joy in getting properly soaked. Norfolk’s walks are world-class – wild, windswept, and wonderfully unpredictable. If you’re after a holiday that’s less about lounging and more about letting the weather lead the dance, grab your boots and head to a cottage like mine. Just pack extra socks. I’m already plotting the return – next time, I’ll outsmart those skies.
