Exploring Norfolk
Just got back from an absolute dream of a break at a luxury holiday cottage in Norfolk, and blimey, the autumn timing made it magical. I’d booked this posh little gem near the North Norfolk coast – think thatched roof, wood-burning stove, and views over rolling fields turning all golden and rusty. It was mid-October, that sweet spot when summer’s heat has packed up, but the chill hasn’t fully bitten yet. Perfect for cosying up with a cuppa, watching leaves swirl like confetti from the massive garden windows.

The season shaped everything, really. Mornings started misty and crisp, the sort that demands a brisk walk to shake off the dew. We’d trundle down to Holkham Beach, just a short drive away – miles of empty sands under a vast sky, the sea a moody grey-green. No crowds, just us, a couple of hardy dog-walkers, and seals barking from the dunes. I’d laugh at myself, wrapped up like a sausage roll in my Barbour, pretending I’m some rugged explorer. But honestly, that fresh, briny air? It cleared my head like nothing else. Back at the cottage, we’d light the fire and tuck into local crab from Wells-next-the-Sea, bought fresh from the harbour. Autumn’s bounty – pumpkin soups and apple crumbles from the farm shop – tasted a million times better with the woodsmoke curling up the chimney.

Afternoons were for gentle potterings. The Norfolk Broads were calling, all that golden reed-bed glow under low sun. We hired a rowing boat near Wroxham, drifting lazily as kingfishers flashed by. The cooler weather meant no sweaty hikes, just peaceful paddles with the water mirroring the turning foliage. One evening, we hit a harvest festival at a nearby pub in Burnham Market – mulled cider, live folk music, and pie that could make you weep. I caught myself reflecting there, pint in hand, on how I never slow down at home. This seasonal hush forced me to match its rhythm: no rushing, just breathing in the earthy dampness, feeling properly unplugged.

Evenings sealed the deal. With nights drawing in early, the cottage’s underfloor heating and that Aga cooker turned it into a proper haven. We’d binge on Norfolk cheeses and chutneys, stargazing from the hot tub under a sky packed with constellations – Orion winking through the branches. No light pollution out there; it’s like the universe put on a private show. Sure, there was a cheeky moment when I slipped on wet leaves chasing a pheasant across the lawn – classic me, all enthusiasm, no grace. But laughing it off by the fire, with rain pattering on the roof, felt like the season’s gift: a reminder to embrace the muddle.

Norfolk in autumn isn’t flashy; it’s that quiet luxury of nature winding down, mirroring your own need to recharge. If you’re after proper escapism, time it right – you won’t regret it. Can’t wait to go back.
