About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive down to Southwold – a proper faff from the start. We’d packed the car with enough books, snacks, and dog leads to last a siege, but halfway there, just past Lowestoft, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping round some back lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. My other half was gripping the wheel like it owed her money, and I was trying not to laugh while pretending to check the map on my phone (which had no signal, naturally). Still, by the time we rolled into town, the sun was dipping low over the pier, and all that stress melted away. Southwold has that magic, doesn’t it? You arrive frazzled, and five minutes later, you’re already plotting your next nap.

Pulling up to the place, my heart did a little flip – it was even better than the photos. This ground-floor apartment, perfect for just the two of us, screamed cosy coastal chic without trying too hard. Tastefully done in soft neutrals with those little artistic nods to the sea everywhere, it felt like slipping into someone’s lovely home rather than a rental. Spacious doesn’t cover it; the open-plan kitchen and dining area flows into a squishy sofa setup that’s made for lounging, and that bi-fold door? Pure genius. It swings wide to a shared courtyard garden that’s all charm and zero effort – a few pots of lavender, a bench, and on a good day, you can almost taste the salt air while sipping your tea.

We didn’t waste a second unpacking properly. The dog bounded out to sniff every blade of grass, and we followed with mugs of builder’s brew, flopping onto the outdoor chairs as the evening cooled. That first impression? Spot on. It’s smack in the heart of Southwold, a gentle wander from the lighthouse winking in the distance, the beach’s endless shingle, and the high street’s clutch of independent shops. But here’s the thing – we weren’t there to tick boxes or march miles. No, this trip was about the sheer joy of bugger all. Lazy cottage days, that’s what we craved, and boy, did it deliver.

Mornings blurred into reading sessions on the sofa, feet up, with the door flung open to let the garden breeze wander in. I’d buried myself in a dog-eared paperback – some light thriller I’d been saving – while she tackled her latest rom-com novel, both of us ignoring the world beyond the courtyard walls. Lunch was whatever we fancied rustling up in the slick new kitchen: cheese toasties one day, a lazy ploughman’s the next, eaten al fresco as the sun warmed the flagstones. Afternoons? More of the same, really. A doze with the radio murmuring, the dog snoring at our feet, and the odd potter in the garden to deadhead a flower or two. It was blissfully pointless, and that’s the point.

One evening, as we watched the sky turn pink from our perch outside, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the lot – but here, slowing down felt revolutionary. I caught myself grinning like an idiot, thinking, “This is it, isn’t it? Proper unwinding.” No grand adventures needed; just this perfect pocket of Suffolk peace, with the sea’s hush as our soundtrack. If you’re after a couple’s retreat to recharge, you couldn’t wish for better. We left feeling lighter, already dreaming of the next time we’d do sweet nothing.
