About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive down to Woodbridge – we’d packed the car to bursting with kids’ toys, cool bags, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. A rogue pheasant decided to play chicken right in front of us, forcing an emergency brake that sent crisps flying everywhere. The kids thought it was hilarious; I was just glad we arrived in one piece, hearts racing but buzzing with that holiday anticipation.

Pulling up to the place, my first glimpse was a jaw-dropper – this third-floor penthouse right in the heart of Woodbridge, staring straight out over the River Deben. It’s one of those spots that feels like a proper treat, all sleek and inviting, with an open-plan living area that sweeps you in the moment you step through the door. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the water and that quirky old Tide Mill, turning every glance outside into a postcard moment. We dumped the bags and just stood there, grinning like idiots, already plotting lazy mornings with coffee in hand.

Settling in felt effortless, the kind of easy rhythm you crave on a family break. The kitchen’s a dream for knocking up family feasts – we rustled up pasta one night with the kids “helping” (read: making a floury mess), then sprawled at the big dining table, windows flung open to the river breeze. Mornings kicked off with brekkie while watching boats chug by, and afternoons melted into downtime on the comfy sofas, feet up, no agenda. It’s that simple joy of being together without the usual rush.

We wandered into Woodbridge’s gentle buzz – just a stroll away, the independent shops and cafes had us stocking up on local cheeses and fresh bread from the market. The kids loved pottering along the quay, chucking pebbles into the Deben and spotting seals bobbing about. One evening, we timed it for the tide turning at the Tide Mill – magic, that, watching the wheel creak into life after centuries. No big plans, just ambling back for fish and chips eaten straight from the paper on the balcony, laughing as the sun dipped low.

Of course, there was the classic cottage-life chaos – a epic battle with a wonky umbrella in a sudden shower, and the youngest declaring war on the sofa cushions, turning the living room into a fort. I caught myself one quiet moment, glass of wine in hand, gazing at the family conked out after a day of nothing much, and thought, this is it, isn’t it? Those unhurried days recharging the batteries amid the glorious disorder. Suffolk’s got that knack for stripping life back to the good bits – river views, full tummies, and zero stress. We left wishing we’d booked longer.
