About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive down to Woodbridge – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Ipswich, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent me looping down a muddy farm track. Heart in my mouth, I reversed out, splattered in muck, laughing at myself for thinking I could outsmart Suffolk’s winding lanes. But as I finally pulled up to this third-floor penthouse apartment right in the heart of town, all that stress melted away. What a stunner – this stylish, airy open-plan living space with its kitchen-dining setup screaming "cook up a storm together", and those rooftop views over Woodbridge that made me grin like an idiot. From the off, it felt like the perfect base for a lazy holiday, close to everything yet somehow worlds away.

Eager to explore but not fussed about the tourist traps, I grabbed a map (old-school style, none of that app nonsense) and just wandered. First hidden gem came by pure accident – I took a wrong turn behind the high street and stumbled into Seckford Street, this quiet nook with a brilliant little indie bookshop tucked away. Spent an hour nose-deep in local history tomes, emerging with a dog-eared guide to Suffolk’s secret spots. Felt like I’d cracked a code.

Next day, I let the Deben’s pull take me. Instead of the main paths, I veered off down a footpath from the riverbank near the Tide Mill – you know, that iconic spot everyone raves about. Got properly lost in the marshes, boots squelching, but oh, what a payoff. Ended up at a secluded bench overlooking Melton’s hidden creeks, where seals bobbed about like cheeky locals saying hello. No crowds, just me, a thermos of tea from the penthouse’s swish kitchen, and that rare peace you chase on holiday. Laughed at how I’d nearly tripped into the water pretending to be David Attenborough.

The real magic kept unfolding that way. One evening, aiming for a quick pint at the Dog pub (Woodbridge’s unmissable without trying), I detoured through back lanes and found this tiny artist’s alley off Thoroughbred Retail Park – quirky studios spilling with pottery and prints. Chatted with a potter who’d lived there 40 years; bought a wonky mug that’s now my favourite. Another time, cycling (borrowed bikes from town, dead easy), I missed the main road to Ufford and pedalled into a wildflower meadow path that led to a forgotten picnic spot by the river. Picnicked on a ploughman’s I’d rustled up in the apartment’s massive kitchen – cheese, Suffolk ham, the works. Sat there reflecting on how I’m always rushing life at home, yet here, getting lost was the best plan.

Even a rainy afternoon led to gold: ducked into a side street cafe off Market Hill, this gem called The Table with cakes to die for and locals swapping stories. By week’s end, I’d mapped a mental list of these off-piste treasures – all within a stone’s throw, discovered by ditching the straight lines. That penthouse was the ideal hub: flop on the plush sofas after, views twinkling at dusk, plotting the next meander. Suffolk’s got this knack for rewarding the wanderers. Can’t wait to get lost there again.
