We set off from home with the usual over-optimism about traffic, only to discover halfway down the A12 that I’d packed the satnav but left the actual address on the kitchen table. Cue twenty minutes of increasingly frantic scrolling while my partner navigated roundabouts one-handed. By the time we pulled up outside Dunes Cottage the sun was already sliding towards the rooftops, and the first thing that greeted us wasn’t the sea view but a rogue seagull trying to claim the doorstep as its own.

The cottage sits just far enough from the road that you can hear the waves if the wind’s right, and the moment we stepped inside the hush felt deliberate. Pale walls, a couple of well-worn sofas, and a kettle that looked like it had boiled its way through several summers already. We dumped the bags, made tea in mismatched mugs, and carried them straight out to the little patio where two stripy deckchairs waited like they’d been expecting us.

That first afternoon set the tone for everything that followed. We didn’t unpack properly until the next day; instead we wandered the short path to the beach, shoes in hand, and spent an hour simply standing at the edge of the tideline watching the light change on the water. Back at the cottage the garden caught the last warmth of the day, so we stayed there with paperbacks and the occasional biscuit raid from the tin we’d brought. The neighbour’s cat appeared briefly, judged us harmless, and left again.

Evenings were early by our usual standards. Supper came from whatever we’d grabbed at the little shop a short stroll away—fresh bread, local cheese, maybe a punnet of strawberries if we were lucky. We ate outside until the midges found us, then moved indoors to finish the crossword we’d abandoned on the train. Sleep came easily; the quiet here isn’t the dramatic sort, just the absence of traffic and the low, steady sound of the sea.

By the third morning any lingering urge to “do” something had evaporated. We’d planned a gentle walk along the dunes, but the sun on the patio looked too inviting, so we compromised by reading in shifts: one of us in a deckchair, the other on the bench by the wall, swapping places whenever the shade moved. The only real exertion was refilling the teapot.

What surprised me, looking back, was how little I missed the usual holiday checklist. Normally I’d be fretting about tide times or whether we’d seen the “best” bit of coastline, but here the days blurred together in the gentlest way. A book finished, another started; sand between the floorboards; the occasional gull still eyeing the doorstep. By the time we loaded the car again, the satnav address was still on the kitchen table at home, but it didn’t seem to matter. We’d arrived, we’d slowed down, and for a few days that had been more than enough.
