Exploring Suffolk
Just got back from a cracking week in a luxury holiday cottage in Suffolk, and blimey, the autumn timing made it pure magic. We booked this posh pile near Aldeburgh in mid-October, when the leaves are turning that fiery orange and the air’s got that crisp bite—none of your sweaty summer hordes, just us and the wind whispering through the reed beds.

Pulled up to the cottage as the sun dipped low, painting the flint walls in golden hues. It’s one of those dreamy spots: think exposed beams, an Aga humming away, and a wood-burner ready to roar. But autumn? It elevates everything. I stepped out for a mooch around the garden, crunching over fallen apples and conkers, feeling like a kid again. No frantic mowing or pollen sneezes—just that mellow decay scent, earthy and nostalgic. Made me reflect on how I never slow down back home; here, the season forced me to linger with a mug of tea, watching mist roll in from the marshes.

Next morning, we headed to RSPB Minsmere, binoculars at the ready. Autumn’s the season for bird migrations, and Suffolk delivers. We spotted bearded tits flitting through the reeds and a marsh harrier quartering the fields—proper wildlife telly stuff, without David Attenborough’s voiceover. The chill wind off the North Sea had us wrapped up in woollies, cheeks rosy, but it sharpened every sighting. Laughed my socks off when I tried a dramatic “look over there!” pose, only to trip on a tussock. Selfie fail, but the photo’s a cracker now.

Lunches were all about the harvest bounty. Nipped to a farm shop near Woodbridge for squash, blackberries, and local pork pies. Back at the cottage, we rustled up a feast by the fire—roast butternut soup and blackberry crumble. The season’s glut meant everything tasted richer, more comforting. Evenings, we’d cosy up with board games and a bottle of Suffolk red, rain pattering on the thatch. No summer barbecues here; autumn’s about hunkering down, and that wood-smoke glow from the chimney made it feel like our own little hygge haven.

Ventured to Orford Ness one blustery afternoon, that shingle spit with its eerie pagodas. The low sun slanted across the waves, turning the sky apocalyptic pink and purple. Waves crashed wilder than summer’s polite lapping, and we huddled in the visitor centre with hot chocolate, swapping stories. It hit me then—autumn strips away the gloss, shows the raw edge of the coast. Made me grateful for the quiet; in peak season, you’d queue for this view.

Suffolk in autumn isn’t flashy; it’s a gentle nudge to breathe deep and appreciate the fade. That cottage stay wasn’t just a holiday—it was a season-shaped reset. If you’re chasing luxury without the crowds, time it for the fall. You won’t regret it.
