Exploring Suffolk
Just got back from the most brilliant week in a luxury holiday cottage in Suffolk, and I’m already plotting our return. It was one of those proper family breaks where you swap the daily grind for muddy wellies and endless cups of tea, nestled in the rolling countryside near Aldeburgh. The cottage itself was a dream – think exposed beams, a massive Aga that I inevitably scorched the toast on, and a garden that begged for lazy afternoons with a GandT in hand.

We arrived on a drizzly Friday, the kids piling out of the car like feral puppies, straight into the chaos of unpacking. Suffolk does that to you – it’s all about slowing down, isn’t it? No neon lights or packed itineraries; just the simple joy of a crackling wood burner and board games that descended into arguments over Monopoly money. I caught myself reflecting there, mid-row about whether the top hat trumps the dog: when did life get so complicated that cheating at a kids’ game feels like the highlight?

Days blurred into a rhythm of gentle adventures. Mornings kicked off with breakfast feasts – local sausages from the butcher in Southwold, piled high with eggs from the farm shop down the lane. Then we’d mooch off to the beach at Aldeburgh, where the shingle crunches underfoot and the sea air hits you like a brisk wake-up call. The kids built epic sandcastles (that the tide promptly demolished), while I failed spectacularly at skimming stones. “Dad, you’re rubbish!” they cackled. Cheeky sods, but it had me chuckling too – who needs precision when you’ve got waves crashing and fish and chips from the hut, wrapped in paper and devoured on the spot?

Afternoons were pure cottage bliss: foraging for blackberries along the Suffolk Coastal Path, getting gloriously lost in the reed beds near Snape Maltings. We stumbled on a hidden nature reserve, spotting seals bobbing offshore – magic for the little ones, and a quiet reminder for me that us grown-ups could do with more wide-eyed wonder. Back at the cottage, chaos reigned in the kitchen. I fancied myself a chef with a Suffolk seafood platter – crab from Orford, samphire foraged nearby – but let’s just say the smoke alarm got more action than the kids. Still, we laughed it off with pints of Adnams from the local brewery, feet up on the plush sofas.

Evenings wrapped up with stargazing from the hot tub (yes, luxury touches like that made it heaven), the Milky Way blazing overhead without a hint of light pollution. One night, as the kids conked out early, I sat there with a mug of cocoa, pondering how these scruffy, joyful days recharge the soul more than any spa weekend ever could. Suffolk’s got that understated charm – wild, windswept, and wonderfully unpretentious.

We left with sandy shoes, full bellies, and a promise to come back. If you’re after a family escape that’s equal parts relaxation and delightful disorder, hunt down a Suffolk cottage. You won’t regret it.
