Exploring Suffolk
The season dictated our days from the off. Mornings started slow, wrapped in the cottage’s fluffy robes, sipping coffee while mist rolled over the Stour Valley. No rushing about in that golden light; instead, we’d wander the footpaths to Flatford Mill, where the colours popped like a Constable painting on steroids—russets, ambers, and those defiant greens clinging on. I had a proper moment of self-reflection there, crunching through the leaves, realising how rare it is to just *stop* and let the quiet sink in. Back at the cottage, the Aga was our hero, churning out hearty breakfasts of local sausages from the farm shop in Lavenham. Autumn’s bounty meant endless feasts: roasted pumpkin soups, apple crumbles from Suffolk’s orchards, and cheeses from the Alderton Dairy that paired perfectly with a cheeky glass of wine by the fire. Afternoons were for gentle adventures shaped by the cooling temps. We cycled the gentle trails around Minsmere RSPB reserve, binoculars at the ready for the seasonal bird migrations—geese honking overhead like they owned the sky. Suffolk’s coast in autumn is underrated; the shingle beaches at Aldeburgh stretched empty, waves crashing under bruised skies, perfect for bracing walks that left us rosy-cheeked and starving. One hilarious mishap: I slipped on wet seaweed, landing bum-first in a rockpool. Laughing it off with my other half, we retreated to the cottage’s hot tub—bless its heated jets—for a soak amid falling leaves. Pure luxury, that, turning a daft tumble into spa-level bliss. Evenings sealed the deal. With nights drawing in early, we’d light the wood-burner (endless logs supplied, thank goodness) and tuck into candlelit dinners. The cottage’s kitchen, kitted out with Smeg ovens and local gin on tap, made it easy to channel my inner Nigella. Reflecting on it now, autumn forced a slower pace—no summer FOMO here—just cosy hygge vibes that city life forgets. We read by the fire, played board games, and stared at the stars through the skylight, Orion winking back. Suffolk in autumn isn’t for sun-worshippers; it’s for souls craving that earthy glow. If you’re after a reset, book a cottage like ours—seasonal shifts make it unforgettable. I’m already plotting a return for next year’s foliage frenzy. |
