Exploring Suffolk
Just got back from a cracking long weekend at this posh holiday cottage in Suffolk, and blimey, the autumn timing made it pure magic. We're talking mid-October, when the leaves are turning that fiery gold and red, carpeting the lanes like someone's spilled a painter's palette. I booked this gorgeous stone-built place near Aldeburgh – think thatched roof, wood-burning stove, and views over rolling fields that stretch to the sea. It was one of those spots where the season does all the heavy lifting, turning a simple getaway into something properly soul-stirring.

First morning, I woke to mist rolling off the reed beds, the kind of damp chill that demands a full English brekkie by the Aga. Suffolk in autumn is brekkie heaven: local sausages from the farm shop, black pudding that's proper meaty, and apples from the orchard next door, crisp and tart enough to wake you up better than coffee. We crunched through the estate woods, kicking leaves and spotting the odd deer – none of that summer sweat, just fresh air that fills your lungs like a reset button. I had one of those daft moments, slipping on wet moss and landing flat on my bum, laughing like an idiot while the dog looked mortified. "Serves you right for not wearing wellies," I muttered to myself, but honestly, it was the perfect nudge to slow down.

The season shaped every outing. No battling holiday crowds here; the beaches at Snape Maltings were ours alone, with the North Sea whipping up a proper breeze that turned a stroll into an adventure. We wrapped up in scarves, gathered driftwood for the fire, and watched seals bob in the waves – they're cheekier in autumn, popping up like nosy neighbours. Evenings meant mulled cider from the local brewery, feet up as the cottage glowed amber against the darkening sky. Suffolk's harvest vibes were everywhere: pumpkin patches near Woodbridge bursting with wonky gourds, and farm shops piled high with squash, damsons, and that earthy smell of turned soil.

One quiet afternoon, sat on the terrace with a cuppa, I got properly reflective. Summer's all flash and fizz, but autumn strips it back – no distractions, just you, the rustling trees, and that gentle nudge that life's too short not to savour the slow bits. I caught myself thinking how I could've stayed forever, wrapped in that cosy hush. We even managed a cream tea at a tearoom in Lavenham, the half-timbered villages looking like they'd stepped from a Beatrix Potter book, all mellowed by the fading light.

Heading home, Suffolk's flatlands blurred gold in the rearview, and I was already plotting a return – maybe winter next, for frosty walks and roaring fires. If you're chasing that proper escape, time it for autumn; it turns a luxury cottage into your own little haven, season's blessings included.
