About Derbyshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Buxton – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Manchester turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through the Peak District, directing us down a narrow lane that was more goat track than road. We ended up reversing into a hedge after meeting an oncoming tractor, with me yelling at the dashboard like it was personal. My other half just laughed, munching on a Greggs pasty, while I fretted about scratches on the hire car. By the time we spotted the first signs for Buxton, hearts racing and cheeks flushed, I was half-convinced the holiday was cursed before it began.

Pulling up to our little one-bed apartment, though, all that stress melted away like a Cornetto on a hot day. Tucked right in the heart of town, it was one of those cosy spots that looks unassuming from the outside but hits you with that warm, welcoming vibe the moment you step in. Fresh linens, a cracking little kitchenette, and a view straight out to the hills – first impressions? Bloody brilliant, or rather, absolutely spot-on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just soaked it in, giggling about our rural detour.

Next morning, anticipation buzzing, we wandered out into Buxton proper, and it didn’t disappoint. The Pavilion Gardens were a riot of colour, perfect for a gentle amble with coffee in hand – I even managed a sneaky nap on a bench, pretending I was proper cultured. Popped into the Opera House too; the foyer’s got that grand old charm, posters up for some musical coming soon that had us itching to book tickets. Lunch was at a nearby café, devouring paninis and people-watching the locals bustle about.

Fancying a bit of adventure, we headed to Poole’s Cavern – a short hop away, and what a belter. Those stalactites dripping away underground felt like stepping into a fairy tale, though I did have a wobbly moment on the slippery steps, clinging to the railing like a kid on their first school trip. Self-reflection hit me there in the cool darkness: I’m always rushing life at home, but down in that cave, time slowed right down. Made me realise holidays like this are for breathing, not checklists.

Afternoon took us up through Buxton Country Park, puffing up paths with views that stretched forever – proper Peak District postcard stuff. Back in town, we mooched along the streets, nipping into boutiques for silly souvenirs and grabbing fish and chips to eat back at the apartment. Evenings blurred into lazy ones: cooking pasta, streaming a film, windows open to the fresh air.

That messy arrival set the tone, weirdly – turned what could’ve been a slick break into something real and memorable. Buxton’s got it all: culture, caves, countryside, and cafes that hit the spot. If you’re after a proper unwind in Derbyshire, hunt down a bolthole like ours. We’re already plotting a return, minus the hedge incident.
