About Derbyshire
I finally made it to Ashbourne after what felt like the world's slowest drive from the Midlands. Sat nav decided to have a funny turn just outside Matlock, sending me down a narrow lane that was more cow path than road—complete with a sheep blockade that had me honking like a daft tourist. Fifteen minutes of gentle bleating negotiations later, I emerged onto the main drag, heart racing a bit, but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. Ashbourne's Market Square was just coming into view, all bunting and buzzing with locals, and I couldn't wait to dump my bags and flop.

Pulling up to the landmark building right on the square, my first impressions were spot on. It's one of those four posh one-bedroom apartments on the first floor—mine with cracking views straight over the market hustle below. Perfectly kitted out for a couple, with spacious rooms that feel dead welcoming, top-notch furniture, and a sitting room that's basically an invitation to do bugger all. Smart TV for the odd binge, but honestly, who needs it when you've got this setup screaming "relax"?

We'd planned this getaway specifically to switch off—no grand hikes into the Peak District depths, no Dovedale scrambles five miles off. Just lazy days savouring the joy of very little. First morning, I cracked open the window to the gentle chatter of the square market—traders hawking cheeses and pies—and brewed a proper cuppa. Sat there in the sunlit sitting room, feet up, watching the world go by without a care. Bliss.

The garden out back became our secret haven. Tucked away but with those same gorgeous square views peeking through, it's a lush little spot with benches begging for a book and a brew. I spent hours there, nose in a battered paperback (some detective yarn I'd been meaning to finish for months), only stirring for the occasional stretch or to nibble on fresh scones from the bakery round the corner. My other half dozed under the parasol, and we barely spoke—content in that rare silence where everything feels right. Lunch was a posh nothing: cheeseboard from the market, a bottle of local ale, and picking at it till sunset.

Evenings blurred into the same dreamy rhythm. Unwind in the sitting room with the TV murmuring in the background—maybe a bit of Antiques Roadshow for that Peak District vibe—while rain pattered softly outside. No rush, no plans. One night, I caught myself staring out at the lit-up square, fairy lights twinkling on the old buildings, and had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home's all deadlines and dash; here, slowing down felt like the real luxury. Why don't I do this more? Laughed at myself for needing a fancy apartment to remember that doing sod all is the best recharge.

A couple of ambles round Ashbourne's centre for coffee and a gawp at the independent shops kept things ticking over, but mostly, it was garden lounging, reading marathons, and that deep, unhurried unwind. Left feeling brand new, already plotting the next "do nothing" escape. If you're after Peak District proper without the proper effort, this is your spot.
