About Derbyshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Over Haddon last month – a proper British road trip that started with sunshine peeking through the clouds and ended with me swearing at the sat-nav (under my breath, mind). We’d left Manchester early, buzzing with that holiday anticipation, windows down, dreaming of cosy evenings in the Peak District. But halfway there, just past Buxton, the heavens opened. Torrential rain hammered the windscreen, turning the A6 into a sloshy mess. I pulled over for a brew at a soggy café, laughing at how we Brits always pack for every season in one weekend bag. Still, by the time we wound down into the picture-perfect village of Over Haddon, the clouds were parting like they’d heard we’d arrived.

First impressions? Magic. This beautiful cottage, perfect for romantic breaks, is a pretty detached gem nestled right in the heart of it all, in the Peak District National Park. We stepped inside to the smell of fresh linen and a wood burner ready to roar – pure bliss after that drenched drive. Dropped the bags, cracked open a bottle of wine, and just soaked it in. Little did we know the weather was about to become our cheeky co-star for the whole stay.

Day one, we laced up our boots for a gentle stroll along the Limestone Way, aiming for Lathkill Dale. The forecast promised blue skies, so off we went, hand in hand, marvelling at the rolling hills and babbling brooks. It was one of those walks where you chat about everything and nothing, feeling miles from real life. But oh, the British weather – mid-morning, it flipped from sunny to squally in seconds. We dashed under a massive oak as hail pelted down, giggling like kids. Plan B: hot chocolate back at the cottage, plotting tomorrow’s hike.

Next day, undeterred, we tackled the Monsal Trail. Started drizzly, but we’re hardy northerners – waterproofs on, spirits high. The old railway path winds through tunnels and viaducts, with views over the River Wye that make your heart skip. Halfway, the sun burst out, turning the dale into a lush green paradise. We picnicked on a bench (sandwiches slightly soggy, naturally), watching dippers flit along the water. Pure joy. But come afternoon, fog rolled in thick as pea soup, forcing an early retreat. Back at base, we dried off, lit the fire, and reflected on how these curveballs make the best memories. Me? I’m usually a planner, fretting over forecasts, but this trip taught me to just go with the rain – it’s what keeps Derbyshire wild and wonderful.

Our last morning was a short loop up to Over Haddon’s viewpoint, mist clearing to reveal the dales stretching forever. Weather held just long enough for that triumphant finish. Packing up, I felt that gentle pang – holidays end too quick, but the walks, the laughs, and those unpredictable skies? They’ve got me hooked. If you fancy a romantic Peak District escape with hikes that adapt to whatever the clouds chuck at you, this corner of Derbyshire’s calling your name.
