About Peak District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Hope Valley – we took the scenic route from Sheffield, windows down, classic FM on low, dreaming of that first cuppa on arrival. But typical me, I missed the turn for the A6187 and ended up in a muddy layby near Bamford, arguing with the satnav like it was my ex. Half an hour later, heart racing a bit from the detour, we rolled into Hope, and blimey, what a sight. Nestled right in the heart of the Peak District’s Hope Valley, this cosy apartment welcomed us with open arms – modern inside but with that perfect nod to rustic charm, like it was built for folk who just want to switch off.

From the off, I was buzzing with anticipation. We’d booked it for a long weekend, craving nothing more than to do bugger all after months of city grind. Unpacked in ten minutes flat, kettle on, and straight out to the garden. It’s a proper suntrap, that patch – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, views stretching over the valley without a care. I plonked myself in a lounger with a dog-eared copy of The Remains of the Day (fitting, eh?), while the other half fiddled with a picnic from Hope’s farm shop down the road. Cheese, local bread, a slab of their fudge – sorted.

The joy of it was the slowness. No alarms, no plans. Mornings melted into reading sessions, me chuckling at Ishiguro’s butler while sheep ambled past. We’d wander five minutes to the village grocers for supplies – fresh eggs, a paper – then back for lazy lunches in the garden, watching clouds drift over Lose Hill. One afternoon, I swear I dozed off mid-chapter, only to wake with a robin hopping on my knee. Proper magic. Evenings? A gentle stroll to one of the pubs on the doorstep, pint of something local, back before dark to stargaze from the garden. No need for epic hikes; the walks and cycle paths start from the front door, but we saved our energy for… well, not much.

There was this moment of gentle self-reflection on day two, feet up, tea in hand, thinking how I’d been rushing through life like a fool. Here, time stretched out – no emails pinging, just the rustle of leaves and the distant choo-choo of the Manchester-Sheffield train. We did pop over to Castleton, a quick mile-and-a-half jaunt for coffee and a gawp at the Blue John shops, but even that felt indulgent, not obligatory. Hathersage’s outdoor pool tempted, but nah – garden lounging won every time.

By checkout, I was plotting a return. Hope Valley’s got it all on the doorstep for chilling: cafes, delis, that cracking farm shop. It’s the antidote to burnout – proving you don’t need to conquer peaks to feel on top of the world. If you’re after lazy cottage days that recharge the soul, this is your spot. Can’t recommend it enough.
