About County Durham
I’ll never forget the drive up to County Durham last month – me behind the wheel, kids bickering in the back about who got the last Haribo, and the satnav deciding to have a mid-journey meltdown just as we hit the A1. “Recalculating,” it chirped endlessly, while I white-knuckled it through a sudden downpour. We ended up taking a daft detour through some sleepy villages, but honestly, it was the perfect teaser for the rolling countryside ahead. By the time we crested that final hill, hearts racing with that proper holiday buzz, the panoramic views across Weardale had us all grinning like idiots. What a first impression – lush green hills stretching out forever, sheep dotted about like fluffy clouds, and not a traffic jam in sight.

Pulling up to our quirky converted boat cottage felt like stumbling into a storybook. Tucked away with those sweeping views over the heart of County Durham’s countryside, it was compact and cosy, the sort of place that screams “slow down and switch off.” Ideal for a family escape, even if it meant a bit of creative Tetris with the suitcases. The kids claimed it was like living on a pirate ship – high praise from that lot – and I have to admit, waking up to birdsong and moors right on the doorstep was pure magic.

We wasted no time diving into the simple pleasures. Mornings started with brekkie chaos: me flipping slightly burnt bacon on the tiny hob while the little ones raided the fridge for yogurt pots. Then we’d bundle out for gentle rambles along the Weardale river paths – nothing too strenuous, just splashing in shallow streams and spotting buzzards overhead. The North Pennines’ peaceful moors were a stone’s throw, with easy trails that had the kids pretending to be explorers, me trailing behind with a thermos of tea, feeling smug about dodging the daily grind.

A quick hop to Crook, just 2.5 miles down the road, sorted our weekly fix of local treats. The market town’s conservation area was buzzing with stalls groaning under fresh pies, artisan cheeses, and veg straight from nearby farms. We nabbed a punnet of strawberries that tasted like summer and wandered the shops, picking up silly souvenirs like handmade fudge that didn’t survive the car journey home. Back at the cottage, afternoons blurred into lazy games of cards on the deck, with the kids building dens from cushions while I pottered about, half-reading a book, half-watching the clouds drift.

Of course, cottage life isn’t all Instagram-perfect. There was that evening when the heavens opened mid-barbecue, sending us scarpering inside for an impromptu pillow fort rave – absolute pandemonium, but the kind of hilarious mayhem that makes memories stick. Reflecting on it now, as we unpacked back home, I realised how those unpolished moments – the squabbles, the soggy socks, the sheer joy of nothing-plans – are what recharged us most. County Durham’s Weardale worked its quiet charm, reminding me that the best holidays are the ones where you let go and just *be*. We’re already plotting a return.
