About County Durham
I’ll never forget the drive up to County Durham last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect mix of gold and rust, carpeting the A1 like nature’s own welcome mat. Me, the wife, and our little one were buzzing with that holiday anticipation, dreaming of cosy nights in after days out exploring. But typical me, I took a wrong turn near Chester-le-Street, ending up on some winding back lane that had me sweating more than a turkey at Christmas. Fifteen minutes of “are we lost?” later, we spotted the signs for Tan Hills, and just like that, the stress melted away as the hamlet came into view, all nestled in that crisp, golden glow of October.

Pulling up to our ground-floor apartment felt like stumbling on a hidden gem. Off-road parking right there – a godsend with the little one’s buggy – and stepping into the entrance hallway, we ditched our muddy wellies, ready for whatever the season threw at us. The open-plan living space hit us first: bright and airy even on a grey afternoon, with space to flop on the sofa, brew a proper cuppa, and flick through the smart TV for some autumnal Bake Off reruns. The kitchen was a dream too – electric oven and gas hob firing up stews that filled the flat with warming aromas, perfect for gathering round the glass table as the evenings drew in early.

Autumn shaped every bit of our stay, turning what could’ve been a standard break into something magical. Mornings started with mist rolling over the fields, and we’d bundle up for a short stroll to nearby Tan Hills, kicking through crunchy leaves while the kid chased conkers. Durham’s just a quick drive away, its cathedral looming like a fairy-tale castle under fiery trees – we wandered the cathedral close one blustery afternoon, the ancient walls glowing in the low sun, and nipped into a café for hot chocolate topped with squirty cream. The season’s chill made those moments extra special, you know? Back at the flat, we’d rustle up hearty pies or soups, the hob bubbling away as rain pattered the windows, turning rainy days into blanket-and-board-game bliss.

One evening, as we watched the sunset paint the sky in bruised purples from the living room, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s been a whirl lately – work piling up, the daily grind – but here, with the family laughing over a silly game of charades and the scent of apple crumble wafting from the oven, I realised how these simple escapes recharge the batteries. No fancy resorts, just a stylish, family-friendly spot that felt like home, amplified by autumn’s cosy embrace.

We even squeezed in a visit to the local park in Chester-le-Street, where the swings creaked under golden canopies, and the air smelled of bonfires from afar. Light-hearted highlight? Me slipping on wet leaves trying to “help” the little one on the slide – earned a round of giggles and a vow to stick to sofa duties next time. By the end of the week, as the trees shed their last leaves, we were gutted to leave. County Durham in autumn? Pure magic – if you’re after a base that lets the season shine, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
