About Old Queen's Head.
The picturesque market town of Wolsingham sits at the entrance to Weardale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the North Pennines. Featuring period stone-built listed buildings, it's a popular stop-off with pubs, cafés, restaurants, shops and takeaways. It hosts the annual Wolsingham Agricultural Show on the first weekend in September. Nearby Hamsterley village, between Teesdale and Weardale, has an old pub and is two miles from Hamsterley Forest (2000 hectares of mixed woodland teeming with wildlife). Nearby attractions.
About County Durham
But honestly, as soon as I pulled up outside this cracking second-floor apartment in an old coaching house smack in the heart of Wolsingham, all that arrival chaos melted away. I was buzzing with anticipation on the approach, wondering if it'd live up to the photos, and blimey, it exceeded expectations right from the off. The place is beautifully done out, proper cosy and inviting, like someone's put real thought into making it feel like a home from home. I hauled my bags up the stairs (note to self: pack lighter next time), unlocked the door, and stepped into this open-plan living space that's just perfect – a well-kitted kitchen with everything you'd need to rustle up a fry-up, a lovely dining spot, and a comfy sitting area with squishy sofas begging you to flop down. First impressions? Spot on. The bedroom's a treat too, snug with an en-suite shower that's powerful enough to wash away the drive's stresses in seconds. It's self-catering heaven, dead central so you're a hop away from the village's brilliant little shops, cracking pubs, and spots for a decent bite. I wandered out that first evening, still chuckling at my earlier navigational farce, and grabbed fish and chips from a place down the road – proper comfort food after the day's palaver. Wolsingham's got this unpretentious charm, nestled in the North Pennine Durham Dales, and staying here feels like you've stumbled on a hidden gem. No need to drive far for adventures; a short stroll or quick spin takes you to Hamsterley Forest, where I hired a bike the next morning and pedalled through those lush trails, dodging mud puddles and grinning like an idiot at the fresh air. It's nature at its finest, all rolling hills and whispering trees – pure therapy after my arrival antics. Reflecting on it now, that messy start was a blessing in disguise. It made the calm of settling in feel even sweeter, a gentle reminder that holidays aren't about flawless plans but those unexpected laughs and the simple joy of a comfy base to return to. If you're after a relaxing bolthole in County Durham with oodles of local charm on your doorstep, this is the ticket. Can't wait to go back – minus the sat nav drama, hopefully. |
