About County Durham
I’ll never forget the drive up to Barnard Castle – sat nav on, cuppa in hand, and me thinking I’d cracked the art of a stress-free road trip. Then, about 20 miles in, I took a wrong turn onto some winding B-road that had more potholes than a cheeseboard. Bounced around like we were in a rally car, with my other half clutching the door handle and muttering about “one of these days”. Laughed it off in the end, though – turned what could’ve been a grump into a proper story to tell.

Pulling into the village, the anticipation was buzzing. We’d been craving a proper break, just us two, and as we spotted the place, it hit us straight away: great first impressions. This characterful first-floor cottage, quirky and cosy, felt like it was made for couples like us – all styled for unwinding from dawn till dusk. Up the internal steps, and there’s this super king-size bedroom that’s just spot on, with a telly, matching cushions, wardrobe, and windows letting in slivers of village life. Proper inviting, it was.

From that moment, we embraced the joy of doing sod all – and I mean it in the best way. No grand plans, no ticking off lists. Just lazy cottage days stretching out like a cat in the sun. Mornings started slow: potter down to the high street for fresh croissants from the bakery (five minutes’ walk, if that), then back to the garden. Oh, that garden – a tucked-away gem, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, perfect for lounging on the chairs with a book. I devoured half a detective novel that first afternoon, feet up, only pausing to brew tea. Teesdale’s unspoilt countryside rolled out beyond, all green hills and peace, but we barely stirred. Why would we? It was bliss just being.

Afternoons blurred into napping, chatting rubbish, or flicking through magazines. One day, I caught myself staring at a butterfly on the lavender for a good ten minutes, mesmerised. Gentle self-reflection hit then: back home, I’m always rushing – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here? Time slowed right down. No pressure to hike the Bowes Museum trails or chase waterfalls in the dale (tempting as they are, just a stone’s throw away). Instead, we’d fire up the little kitchen for lazy suppers – cheese toasties, maybe a bit of local Teesdale cheddar – eaten outside as the sun dipped. Evenings melted into the bedroom setup, bingeing a box set till eyelids drooped.

It was quirky touches that sealed it – those fine details making it feel like a hug. We left feeling recharged, not knackered. If you’re after slowing down in County Durham’s heart, this is your spot. Proper holiday magic in doing next to nothing.
