Exploring County Durham
I’ve just come back from the most gloriously lazy week in a cracking holiday cottage in County Durham, and honestly, it’s made me question my entire hustle-and-bustle life back home. Tucked away in the gentle hills near Barnard Castle – you know, that spot with the dramatic ruins overlooking the Tees Valley – this place was pure bliss. A cosy stone-built luxury rental with all the mod cons, but the real star? Its private hot tub, bubbling away on a wooden deck with views of rolling Dales countryside. No itinerary, no grand plans. Just me, a stack of books, and the sheer joy of doing sod all.

From the moment we arrived, after a straightforward drive up the A66 from the A1, I knew this was my kind of holiday. The owners had left fresh scones, clotted cream, and a jar of local strawberry jam – classic North East welcome. We dumped our bags, cracked open a bottle of wine from the nearby Weardale vineyards (did you know they make decent fizz up here?), and straight into the hot tub. The water was piping hot, steam rising into the crisp autumn air, with nothing but sheep bleating faintly in the distance. I floated there as the sun dipped behind the fells, feeling every knot of London stress melt away. Who needs sightseeing when you’ve got jets massaging your calves like a personal spa therapist?

Days blurred into this perfect rhythm of indolence. Mornings started late – think 10am, with a brew and toast in the sunlit kitchen, gazing out at the patchwork fields. I’d flop onto the squashy corner sofa with a paperback – I devoured three crime novels that week, the kind where the detective’s sharper than me on a good day. No rushing to the Beamish Museum or a hike up the Pennines; instead, I’d lose hours turning pages, only pausing when the fancy kettle pinged for another cuppa. Lunch was lazy foraging from the fridge: cheese from Durham’s own market stalls, crusty bread, and whatever chutney caught my eye. Sat by the Aga, feet up, watching clouds scud over the moors. Pure poetry.

Afternoons were hot tub o’clock. Slipping in with a chilled cider – local Black Sheep, naturally – I’d let the bubbles work their magic while birdsong filled the air. One day, a buzzard circled lazily overhead, mirroring my vibe. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I’d normally be emailing or scrolling, but here? Time stretched like warm toffee. Gentle self-reflection crept in during those soaks: why do I pack my diary so full? This slowing down felt revolutionary, like giving my brain permission to idle. No FOMO, just foam and serenity.

Evenings sealed the deal. As dusk fell – early this far north – we’d light the wood burner, its crackle the only soundtrack needed. More reading by the fire’s glow, maybe a chapter of that Hilary Mantel I’d been meaning to finish. Dinner? A simple pasta thrown together, eaten on the patio under fairy lights, hot tub calling for a nightcap dip. Stars wheeled above, sharper than city skies, and I’d ponder how County Durham’s quiet magic sneaks up on you. No need for epic adventures; the real thrill was savouring the stillness.

Looking back, that week redefined ‘holiday’ for me. In a world screaming ‘do more’, this cottage whispered ‘do less’ – and I listened. If you’re craving a reset, book something similar up here. Trust me, your soul (and your hot tub-reddened toes) will thank you.
