Exploring Northumberland
We arrived on a drizzly afternoon, classic Northumberland weather, and after dumping the bags, the first order of business was a massive fry-up in the Aga-style cooker. The cottage came with all the mod cons – fluffy towels, a telly for rainy days, and a stocked larder with local jams and teabags. But honestly, we barely touched the telly. Instead, we cracked on with the simple stuff that makes these breaks so special. Mornings started with brekkie feasts of bacon butties and fresh eggs from the farm shop down the lane, then we’d pile into wellies for ambles along the nearby coastal path. Bamburgh Beach was a 20-minute drive, and oh boy, those vast sandy stretches with the castle looming like something out of a fairy tale. The boys spent hours body-boarding in the North Sea’s icy waves, emerging blue-lipped and grinning like loons, while we parents pretended not to notice the sand avalanche in the car boot. One highlight was a family hike up to Dunstanburgh Castle ruins – proper windswept drama with gulls wheeling overhead. The lads turned it into a mock battle, pelting each other with imaginary arrows, and I joined in, only to twist my ankle on a rabbit hole. Laughing through the pain, I realised how rare it is these days to just muck about without screens or schedules. That gentle self-reflection hit me as we picnicked on pork pies and flapjacks from the Cragside estate tearoom: in the rush of school runs and work emails, we forget how healing this unhurried chaos is. The boys bickered over the last sausage roll, we got caught in a sudden downpour, and everything tasted better for it. Evenings were pure cottage bliss. We’d fire up the stove, crack open a bottle of wine (local Lindisfarne Mead for a twist), and cook simple suppers – think roast chicken with veg from the garden, or fish and chips from the Amble harbour chippy. Chaos ensued one night when the boys decided to “help” with baking scones; flour everywhere, smoke alarm blaring from a slightly charred batch. We devoured them anyway with clotted cream and strawberry jam, giggling at the mess. After, we’d play board games by lamplight or stargaze from the garden – Northumberland’s dark skies are unreal, with the Milky Way sprawled out like a cosmic spilt milkshake. No light pollution, just us and the odd owl hoot. Of course, it wasn’t all idyllic. The lanes are narrow as a pin, and our sat-nav had a meltdown trying to dodge tractors, leaving us late for a visit to the Farne Islands boat trip (seals and puffins galore, worth every bumpy minute). And let’s not gloss over the midges – those wee beasties feasted on us during a barbecue attempt. But that’s the joy of it: the unpredictability, the minor disasters that turn into stories. Reflecting on it now, sipping tea back home, I see how this break reset us. No grand adventures, just those quiet family moments – building dens in the woods near Cragside, skim-stoning on the River Coquet, or napping in hammocks while the world slowed down. If you’re after a holiday that’s less Instagram-perfect and more heart-warmingly human, grab a Northumberland cottage. Ours was booked through a local agency, pet-friendly too (next time with the dog). We left with sandy shoes, full bellies, and a fierce reluctance to unpack. Proper tonic for the soul. Can’t wait to go back. |
