Experience the magic of one of the UK’s most iconic castles. Built almost a thousand years ago to guard a crossing of the River Aln, Alnwick Castle and Gardens is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland and was featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Like Harry, you too can take your first flying lesson in the grounds of this spectacular castle, learning from the estate’s eccentric wizarding professors.

Exploring Northumberland
I finally made it to our little slice of Northumberland heaven after what felt like the world's most disorganised road trip. Picture this: me, my other half Sarah, and our slightly bewildered spaniel, Monty, crammed into the car with suitcases teetering like a game of Tetris gone wrong. We'd left the Midlands at dawn, aiming for that quintessential holiday cottage in the Northumberland countryside – you know the type, all stone walls, wood burners, and views that make you forget the nine-to-five grind. But no, our sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us via every winding B-road from Newcastle to Berwick. By the time we spotted the thatched roof of Willow Cottage peeking over the hedgerows near Alnwick, I was knackered, Sarah was humming "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac for the umpteenth time to stay sane, and Monty had claimed the boot as his personal kingdom of crisp packets.

Pulling up the gravel drive was pure comedy. I misjudged the turn – classic me – and the front wheel dipped into a puddle the size of Cragside Lake. Mud splattered the windscreen like abstract art, and Sarah yelped, "Watch the paintwork!" as if the car hadn't seen worse from our last glamping fiasco. We tumbled out, arms full of bags, only for Monty to bolt straight for a patch of nettles. Cue me hopping around like a daft fool, trying to rescue him while swearing under my breath in a very un-ladylike fashion. The key safe was mercifully straightforward, but inside? Chaos reigned. I dropped the groceries bag – eggs intact by some miracle, but the milk carton burst open, creating a dairy crime scene on the flagstone floor. Sarah, ever the practical one, grabbed a tea towel while I fumbled with the kettle, convinced a brew would sort everything.

As the steam rose and we mopped up, though, those first proper impressions started to sink in. Willow Cottage was an absolute dream, the sort of place that screams "Northumberland at its best." Exposed beams overhead, a Rayburn cooker humming away like an old friend, and those sash windows framing rolling hills dotted with sheep. The sitting room had a squashy sofa piled with cushions that begged you to flop down, and the faint scent of lavender from the airing cupboard made it all feel like a hug. Outside, the garden backed onto open fields – proper wild ones, where you could almost hear the ghosts of Hadrian's Wall whispering in the wind. I paused mid-mess-clearing, mug in hand, and had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Here we were, city folk turned accidental farmers for a week, and it hit me: this is why we do these trips. Not for Instagram perfection, but for the real stuff – the mishaps that make the good bits shine brighter.

We ventured out that first afternoon, still buzzing from the arrival pandemonium, for a stomp along the nearby coastal path towards Embleton Bay. The North Sea crashed in with that bracing chill, dunes golden under a massive sky, and seals barking in the distance like they owned the place. Monty chased waves like a pro, emerging triumphant and sandy. Back at the cottage by dusk, we cracked open a bottle of local Lindisfarne Mead – cheeky but lush – and rustled up fish and chips from the village shop, eaten on the patio as the sun dipped behind the Cheviots. Sarah and I clinked glasses, laughing about the puddle incident, and I reflected softly that these little holidays remind you life's too short for perfect plans. Sometimes the chaos is the best bit, leading straight to that proper, heart-warming joy of settling into Northumberland's embrace. What a start – I can't wait for day two.
