About Northumberland
I’ll never forget the drive up to Alnwick – we’d planned a smooth few hours from the Midlands, but halfway there, the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us on a detour through some winding country lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. By the time we arrived, just as the sun was dipping low, I was starving and my other half was eyeing me like I’d personally offended the GPS gods. Still, pulling up to this cosy seaside apartment in the heart of historic Alnwick, all lit up warmly, my heart lifted. It looked perfect for our romantic break – inviting, with that just-right charm that screams “put your feet up and forget the world”.

First impressions? Spot on. The place was snug and well-equipped, especially the kitchen, which had us plotting our first meal before we’d even unpacked. We’d stocked up on the way with some basics, but Alnwick’s market town vibe called to us straight away. Next morning, we wandered into the enchanting centre – just a short stroll – and hit the cafes for a proper Northumberland breakfast. Flat whites and fluffy pancakes at one of those indie spots, with locals chatting about the weekend’s footy. It set the tone: this holiday was going to be all about eating our way through the place.

Lunches became a ritual at the markets. Alnwick’s got that brilliant Friday market feel, even if we timed it midweek and caught the tail end of stalls – fresh bread, local cheeses, and the most incredible smoked kippers you’ll ever taste. We grabbed a picnic of crusty rolls stuffed with Northumberland ham and pickle, then headed to Hulne Park, half a mile away. Those peaceful woodland trails were ideal for a wander, munching as we went, pretending we were proper foodies on a gourmet hike. Back at the apartment, my attempt at cooking turned into a comedy of errors – I tried recreating a cheesy rarebit with some market cheddar, but let’s just say the grill had other ideas. We laughed it off with a glass of wine, salvaging it into something edible. Gentle self-reflection moment: I’m no chef, but there’s something therapeutic about faffing in a holiday kitchen, isn’t there? Makes you appreciate the pros even more.

Evenings were pub heaven. There’s a cracking one nearby with real ales and hearty plates – think slow-cooked lamb shank that falls off the bone, paired with mash and gravy so good it could bring tears to your eyes. Another night, we pushed the boat out with fish and chips from a chippy recommended by the barman, eaten back in the apartment with vinegar dripping everywhere. For a romantic twist, we ventured 5.5 miles to Alnmouth’s sweeping golden beach, grabbing seafood from a beachside hut – plump prawns and fresh crab, scoffed on the sand with the salty sea air. Pure bliss, watching the waves while the sun set.

Honestly, this spot’s a gem for food lovers. Between cafe mornings, market hauls, dodgy home cooking, and pub feasts, we ate like kings without straying far. If you’re after a break where every moment revolves around the next meal, Alnwick delivers. We left fuller, happier, and already plotting a return.
