About Northumberland
I’ll never forget the drive up to Northumberland last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a sudden downpour turning the A1 into a bit of a slip-and-slide. I’d misjudged the rain, hadn’t packed the proper coat, and ended up pulling over at a services for a soggy pasty and a cuppa, laughing at myself for thinking I was some sort of intrepid explorer. But as the clouds lifted and we wound our way towards Alnwick, that familiar buzz of holiday anticipation kicked in – you know, the one where you imagine kicking back with no agenda, just pure, unadulterated lounging.

Pulling up to the two-bed cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It had this cosy, welcoming vibe right from the off – picture-perfect for a lazy getaway, tucked just on the edge of the medieval town with its cobbled streets and that grand castle looming nearby (yes, the Harry Potter one – I half-expected a broomstick to zip past). The town walls are literally a stroll away, less than 500 metres, but honestly, who needs history tours when you’ve got a spot like this? First impressions? Spot on. It felt like the sort of place that hugs you and says, “Stay put, love.”

And stay put we did. The joy of this holiday was doing sod all, and I mean that in the best possible way. Mornings started slow – a potter in the little garden out back, sipping tea from mismatched mugs I found in the cupboard, watching the birds flit about while the sun warmed the air. No rush, no plans. I’d flop into a chair with a dog-eared paperback (some cracking historical novel about these parts, naturally), losing hours to the pages while the world ticked on without me. Lunch? Whatever was knocking about – cheese on toast from the shops down the road, or a cheeky pasty from one of the pubs within spitting distance. Alnwick’s got everything you need in a 500-metre radius: butchers, bakers, a couple of cracking tearooms, and proper pubs for an evening pint if the mood took us. But mostly, we didn’t bother. The garden became our universe – lounging on the bench, feet up, chatting nonsense or just staring at the sky, letting the gentle Northumberland breeze do the work.

One afternoon, I caught myself reflecting on it all, glass of local ale in hand. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the lot – and here I was, marvelling at how brilliant it felt to switch off completely. No grand adventures, no ticking off castles like Dunstanburgh or beaches at Alnmouth Bay (tempting as they were, five miles felt like a marathon). Just us, the cottage, and this delicious slowness. A mate rang asking about our “itinerary,” and I nearly choked on my biscuit telling him there wasn’t one. “We’re mastering the art of nowt,” I said, and it was true.

By the end of the week, I was that relaxed I could’ve stayed forever. If you’re after a holiday that’s all about recharging without the faff, this is it. Northumberland’s magic isn’t in the rushing about – it’s in these quiet cottage days that stick with you long after you’ve packed up. Proper treat.
