About Northumberland
I’ll never forget the drive up to Amble – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway there, just past Morpeth, I took a wrong turn onto some winding B-road that had me convinced we were lost in the wilds. Turned out it was a shortcut through the countryside, but my sat-nav had a proper hissy fit, and we ended up laughing about it over emergency pasties from a petrol station. By the time we rolled into town, anticipation was bubbling – I could already smell the sea air and picture cracking open a beer with those marina views we’d been promised.

Pulling up to the cottage, it was love at first sight: a cosy two-bed spot right on the waterfront, all welcoming and perfectly pitched for us two with the dog in tow. The views hit you straight away – boats bobbing in the marina, dunes glowing in the distance, and the North Sea stretching out like an endless invitation. We dumped the bags and cracked on with the first mission: food.

Amble’s harbour is a proper gem for anyone who lives to eat, and we dived in headfirst. First evening, we wandered down to watch the fishing boats unload their catch – glistening mackerel and plump cod right there on the quay. Couldn’t resist grabbing some fresh prawns from a stall, then it was back to the cottage for a bash at cooking them up. I fancied myself a chef, tossing them in garlic butter on the hob while the windows steamed up with sea views. Disaster struck when I overdid the chilli flakes – eyes watering, we ended up giggling through mouthfuls of fiery seafood, washing it down with a cheeky local ale from the fridge. Lesson learned: less is more in a holiday kitchen.

Next morning, we hit the Saturday market in the harbour square – stalls heaving with Northumberland cheeses, plump sausages, and the freshest bread you’ll find. I loaded up on smoked kippers and a wedge of crumbly Stilton, dreaming of a lazy brunch. The cottage’s little kitchen became our HQ; we fried up those kippers with scrambled eggs, the smoky aroma mingling with estuary breezes wafting through the open window. It was bliss, though I’ll admit, my attempt at homemade scones later that day was a comedy of errors – more like rock cakes, but slathered in clotted cream from the market, they went down a treat.

Evenings were for pubs. The Harbour Inn just down the path served the best fish and chips I’ve had in ages – batter crisp as a winter frost, chips fat and fluffy, with mushy peas on the side. We’d perch by the window, watching the boats come in, then stroll back stuffed and happy. One night, we tried the chippy’s seafood platter takeaway: scallops, haddock goujons, and those same prawns, devoured on the cottage terrace as the sun dipped over the dunes. Pure heaven.

Reflecting on it now, that holiday was a gentle nudge that I need to slow down more – no rush, just good food, cracking views, and simple joys like burning your dinner and laughing it off. If you’re after a coastal bolt-hole where every meal feels like a treat, Amble’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return for more of that fresh catch.
