About Northumberland
I’ll never forget the drive up to Northumberland – a proper British road trip, innit? We piled into the car from Leeds, full of beans with a playlist of old sea shanties blaring, dreaming of castle-topped beaches. But about an hour in, disaster struck: a massive pothole on the A1 decided to test our little hatchback’s suspension. We limped into a layby, hearts sinking as I jiggled the wonky wheel. Turned out it was just a loose hubcap – phew! – but it had us laughing at our city-slicker fragility. By the time we rolled into Bamburgh, the sun was peeking through, and anticipation bubbled up like a fizzy Vimto.

Pulling up to this high-quality apartment in a swish Edwardian building right in the village heart, I was gobsmacked. Stunning views over the coast from the windows, and a surprising amount of space inside – perfect for me, my partner, and our two lads. It felt like instant holiday magic, all cosy and elegant without being fussy.

First morning, weather gods smiled: clear skies, perfect for a hike up to Bamburgh Castle, just half a mile away. We stomped along the paths, wind whipping our cheeks, ogling that massive inhabited beast looming over the dunes. The views from the top? Pure poetry – endless North Sea crashing below. We wandered back through the village, popping into cafes for a greasy spoon brekkie, then hit the beach trail, less than a mile out. Dog-friendly all year, it was ace for our scruffy labradoodle, who chased waves like a furry missile. That first impression? Hooked already.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Day two dawned drizzly, turning our planned long coastal ramble into a comedy of errors. We layered up in waterproofs (why do I always pack the wrong coat?) and headed towards Budle Bay, about a mile and a half away. Mist rolled in thick as pea soup, but we ploughed on, spotting oystercatchers and seals through the gloom. Laughing at our soggy boots squelching, we sheltered under a dune for flask tea, plotting a detour. Ended up looping back via village paths, discovering hidden nooks we’d missed before. Proper adventure, that – taught me flexibility’s the real holiday MVP.

Next day, biblical rain forced a rethink. No epic hikes today; instead, we embraced the downpour with a puddle-stomping wander to the Grace Darling Museum, right nearby. Her lighthouse heroics had us wide-eyed, and the storm outside made it feel epic. When it cleared (briefly), we dashed to the beach again, winds howling, building epic sandcastles that the tide claimed in minutes. Hilarious, watching the boys battle the elements like tiny commandos.

By week’s end, after more weather-whipped walks – sunny saunters to Seahouses harbour (three miles, fresh fish and chips heaven) and moody tramps around the dunes – I had a proper moment of reflection. Sat on the apartment balcony, sea mist lifting, I realised these unpredictable hikes were the best bit. Not postcard perfect, but real – windswept, alive, quintessentially British. Northumberland’s coast doesn’t do boring; it does character-building rambles that stick with you. Can’t wait to go back.
