About Northumberland
Pulling up to this wonderful seafront second-floor wing of the former Dunes Hotel, I was buzzing with that holiday anticipation—you know, the bit where you imagine yourself all bronzed and adventurous. But honestly, the first impressions blew me away: those massive picture windows framing the breathtaking coastal views over the dunes, out to the Farne Islands, Holy Island, and even Bamburgh Castle in the distance. To the rear, the Cheviot Hills rolled away like a painting. It's right in the heart of Seahouses, steps from St Aidan's award-winning beach with its two miles of golden sands, and just adjacent to the quaint harbour buzzing with a few local spots for coffee or a pint. Proper period charm without any fuss. From the off, though, I knew this trip wasn't about ticking off lists. Nah, it was all about doing sod all, and loving every lazy minute. First morning, I cracked open the French windows—wait, no, those big ones—and plonked myself in the garden area with a book I'd been meaning to read for months. The sun was doing its thing over the sea, seals barking faintly from the Farners, and I just... stayed there. No agenda. Cup of tea in hand, feet up, watching families amble along the beach. It's funny how you arrive fizzing with energy, then five minutes in, your inner sloth takes over. Days blurred into this blissful rhythm of bugger all. I'd wander down to the harbour for a flaky pastry from one of the tea rooms—nothing fancy, just enough to fuel more lounging—then back for an afternoon in the garden, nose in a novel, letting the waves' rhythm drown out the world. One evening, I did venture out for a gentle stroll along St Aidan's sands, toes in the water, spotting oystercatchers piping away. Bamburgh Castle loomed like a fairy-tale backdrop two miles off, but I resisted the urge to hike it. Instead, sunset from the window with a GandT, reflecting on how knackered I always am back home. Why do we rush so? This place whispered, "Slow down, mate," and I listened. There was this one humorous moment when a cheeky gull dive-bombed my scone—proper Hitchcock vibes—but even that just made me chuckle and retreat indoors for more reading. No boat trips to the Farnes this time; that can wait for the next visit when I'm feeling perkier. Mostly, it was pyjama mornings, lazy lunches from the local shops, and evenings people-watching from the window as Seahouses wound down. Left feeling recharged, not from doing loads, but from doing precisely nowt. If you're after proper RandR by the North Sea, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back and perfect the art of idling. |
