Experience the magic of one of the UK’s most iconic castles. Built almost a thousand years ago to guard a crossing of the River Aln, Alnwick Castle and Gardens is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland and was featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Like Harry, you too can take your first flying lesson in the grounds of this spectacular castle, learning from the estate’s eccentric wizarding professors.

About Northumberland
I finally made it to Northumberland after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from the Midlands. Sat nav decided to throw a proper wobbly just south of Morpeth, rerouting me down a narrow lane that was basically a sheep's personal runway. One minute I'm humming along to the radio, next I'm dodging a flock of the woolly buggers who clearly had right of way. Heart in mouth, I eased past, clipping a wing mirror on a hedge in the process – nothing major, but enough to make me mutter about my driving skills under my breath. Still, the anticipation was buzzing; I'd been dreaming of this cosy escape for weeks, proper peace away from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the superior two-bed property, I was chuffed to bits with the first impressions. It's one of those welcoming holiday homes tucked in a quiet spot near Morpeth, all smart and modern inside with a style that's spot-on for a relaxing break – think comfy sofas, a cracking kitchen, and those little touches like fresh towels that make you feel instantly at home. The garden looked perfect for a morning cuppa, overlooking fields that stretched out peacefully. Chaos of the journey forgotten, I dumped my bags and cracked open a window to let in that crisp Northumberland air. Blimey, it was lush.

First order of business: a wander down to the nearby River Wansbeck, just a short stroll away. The water was sparkling under the sun, and I watched a heron take off like it owned the place – proper majestic. Grabbed a fish and chips from the local spot in Morpeth, nothing fancy but spot-on greasy goodness wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench with the breeze ruffling my hair. Laughed at myself thinking how I'd probably burn it all off clambering up the paths anyway.

Next morning, I headed to nearby Druridge Bay Country Park, only a quick drive. The dunes were calling, and I had a brilliant tramp along the beach, waves crashing and sand shifting underfoot. Picked up some shells for the kids back home – they'll love 'em, or at least pretend to. Back at the property, I fired up the BBQ in the garden, charring sausages to perfection while reflecting on how daft I'd been stressing about work emails before I left. Sat there with a cold beer, watching the sun dip low, feeling properly recharged. Who knew a bit of arrival pandemonium could lead to such a cracking start?

Honestly, Northumberland's got that magic – wild yet welcoming, and this holiday home nailed it. If you're after a no-fuss base for beach rambles and riverside chills, you can't go wrong. Can't wait to go back, minus the sheep standoff next time.
