About Northumberland
The cottage itself sits just a short walk from the beach, tucked behind a low stone wall that still catches the last of the evening sun. When we pulled up, the door key was waiting in the lockbox exactly as promised, and stepping inside felt like being wrapped in a cosy blanket. Two proper bedrooms upstairs, a snug living room with a wood-burner already laid, and a kitchen that somehow had room for all our beach clobber without looking cluttered. The owners had left a pint of milk and a packet of biscuits on the side—small touches that make you feel properly welcome rather than just another booking. After a quick cuppa we wandered down to the shore, shoes kicked off almost straight away. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand perfect for collecting shells and the odd bit of driftwood. The children raced ahead while my other half and I strolled behind, breathing in that clean, salty air you only seem to get this far north. Back at the cottage we grilled some sausages on the little barbecue in the garden, eating them straight from the tray with our fingers because plates felt like too much effort. Evenings here are wonderfully undemanding. We lit the fire, played a noisy game of cards on the kitchen table, and listened to the occasional car pass on the lane outside. No telly blaring, just the crackle of logs and the low murmur of the sea if you opened the window a crack. I found myself thinking how rarely we manage this sort of nothing-in-particular time as a family, and how much we’d needed it without realising. By the time we turned in, the mishap on the lane already felt like part of the story rather than a nuisance. Sometimes the best breaks are the ones that start a little off-kilter and then settle into their own gentle rhythm, and this cottage by the beach gave us exactly that. |
