About Northumberland
The cottage sat tucked behind a low stone wall, its windows glowing warmly against the pale Northumberland sky. The moment we stepped out, the air hit us—clean, salty, and carrying that faint, unmistakable whiff of the sea even though the beach itself was only a short stroll away. My partner gave me a look that said “I told you the satnav was wrong,” but the view softened any lingering tension. Inside, the place felt instantly welcoming: a low-beamed living room with a squishy sofa, a wood burner already laid ready for later, and a kitchen that somehow managed to look both practical and cheerful under the low ceiling. Our bedroom at the back had a view straight out to the water, the sort of sight that makes you forget the three-hour drive in an instant. After unpacking the essentials—mainly snacks and the dog’s lead—we wandered down the little path that led to the beach. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand that caught the last streaks of pink and orange from the setting sun. We didn’t go far; just enough to feel the wind on our faces and watch a couple of oystercatchers skitter along the shoreline. Back at the cottage, I found myself standing in the doorway with a mug of tea, listening to the quiet. It struck me how rarely we actually stop like this—how the mishaps and the long roads somehow make the arrival sweeter, and how a simple cottage by the sea can reset everything without trying very hard at all. |
