About Northumberland
The cottage sat in a neat row of similar places, all whitewashed and tidy, with a little patch of garden that caught the light beautifully. We’d chosen it because it was close enough to the beach to wander down whenever the mood took us, and far enough from everything else that “whenever the mood took us” could stretch into hours. Inside, everything felt ready for exactly that sort of pace: a squashy sofa by the window, a kitchen that didn’t demand anything more complicated than toast and tea, and three bedrooms that promised we could all disappear for a quiet read without getting under each other’s feet. That first afternoon we didn’t even unpack properly. We left the bags by the door, made a round of tea, and wandered the short path to the beach with nothing but a blanket and a couple of paperbacks. The sand was warm underfoot and the sea was that particular North Sea blue that looks colder than it feels. We found a spot out of the wind, spread the blanket, and promptly did nothing of note for the next two hours. I read the same paragraph three times before giving up and just watching the gulls instead. Back at the cottage the evening drifted by in much the same fashion. We cooked something simple, left the doors open to let the last of the sun in, and sat in the garden until the light faded. No telly, no plans, just the occasional comment about how unusually still everything felt. I caught myself checking my phone out of habit, then put it face-down on the table and felt oddly pleased with the small rebellion. The next morning was much the same, only with better coffee and the addition of a deckchair that had clearly seen a few summers already. We took it in turns to claim it, rotating between the garden, the beach, and the sofa like it was serious work. Every so often one of us would suggest a walk along the dunes, and we’d manage about twenty minutes before someone pointed out a particularly good reading spot and that would be that. By the second afternoon I’d stopped feeling guilty about it. The cottage didn’t seem to mind that we were treating it more like a very comfortable waiting room for sunshine than a base for adventures. On the last morning I stood in the kitchen, kettle on, watching the light move across the garden wall, and realised how rarely I let a whole day unfold without a list. The little mishap on the way up already felt like it belonged to another version of me. Here, the only thing that mattered was whether the tide was right for another slow wander and whether the deckchair was free. We packed slowly, leaving the windows open as long as we could, and when we finally pulled away I found myself hoping the sheep wouldn’t be quite so judgemental on the way home. |
