About Northumberland
We’d only been on the road from Newcastle for forty minutes when I realised I’d left the house keys in the kitchen drawer back home. My other half laughed so hard he had to pull into a lay-by, and by the time we reached the little lane that leads to the 3 Bed Cottage in North Sunderland I was still mortified. The cottage sat just a pebble’s throw from the dunes, its whitewashed walls glowing in the late-afternoon sun, and the sight of it somehow made the missing keys feel like somebody else’s problem.

We tumbled out of the car, kicked off our shoes and wandered straight onto the beach without even unpacking. The tide was out, leaving wide, damp sand perfect for barefoot strolling, and the only sound was the soft hush of waves and the occasional cry of a gull. Back at the cottage the kettle whistled while we claimed the best spots on the little patio—him with a crossword, me with the novel I’d been promising myself for months. Every so often one of us would glance up, catch the other’s eye and grin like we’d got away with something.

The days that followed slipped by in the same gentle rhythm. Mornings began with coffee on the doorstep, watching the fishing boats head out, then drifted into long, aimless hours on the sand with nothing more ambitious than a picnic blanket and a bag of scones from the village shop. We read, dozed, paddled when the mood took us, and let the sun warm our shoulders without any plan to be anywhere else. Evenings were for lighting the wood burner, pulling the curtains against the sea breeze and sharing fish and chips straight from the paper.

I hadn’t expected doing so little to feel quite so luxurious. Somewhere between the second chapter and the fourth round of toast, I noticed how rarely I let a whole afternoon stretch without checking a screen or making a list. The cottage didn’t push us to do anything grand; it simply offered a quiet patch of Northumberland coast and the permission to enjoy it slowly. By the time we finally drove away—keys safely in my pocket this time—I caught myself already planning the next stretch of nothing at all.
