About Northumberland
The garden at the back caught the afternoon light perfectly, so we dragged two wooden chairs onto the little patio and sat with our tea, watching a blackbird hop along the fence. From there you could just catch a glint of the sea between the rooftops, and that was enough to lure us down the short lane to the beach. The sand was warm underfoot and almost empty, save for a couple walking their spaniel and a man skimming stones with the sort of serious concentration usually reserved for pub quizzes. We found a spot near the dunes, spread an old towel, and promptly did nothing for the best part of an hour. Back at the cottage the pace didn’t pick up much. The living room had a squashy sofa that seemed to swallow you whole, and I spent the rest of the afternoon there with a dog-eared novel I’d meant to finish months ago. Every so often I’d glance up to see the light shifting across the walls, or hear the faint sound of waves if the window was cracked. My partner pottered about making cheese sandwiches, the sort of low-effort lunch that feels like a feast when you’re not in a rush. We kept saying we might go for a proper walk later, but somehow “later” never arrived. By evening the sky had turned that soft Northumberland gold, and we wandered back down to the beach with a blanket and a couple of cans from the local shop. Sitting on the sand watching the tide ease in, I caught myself thinking how rarely we actually stop like this. The mishap with the satnav already felt like a distant memory, and in its place was a quiet sort of contentment that didn’t need plans or itineraries. The cottage waited patiently behind us, ready for another day of the same gentle nothing. |
