We’d barely turned off the main road when the sat-nav decided we were better off in a field. One minute we were following the polite little arrow towards Byre Cottage, the next it was cheerfully directing us down a farm track that ended in a gate and two very unimpressed sheep. By the time we’d reversed out and found the actual lane, everyone was laughing and the kids had renamed the cottage “Sheep Nav.”

First impressions didn’t disappoint. The cottage sits just far enough from the dunes that you can smell the sea but not hear the traffic, tucked behind a low stone wall with a little gravel parking spot that somehow fitted the car, the buggy and three overstuffed bags. Inside it felt instantly welcoming: low ceilings, a wood-burner already laid, and a kitchen table big enough for board games without anyone having to sit on the floor. The owner had left a pint of milk in the fridge and a note about the best tide times, which felt properly Northumbrian in its thoughtfulness.

After we’d claimed beds and discovered the hot-water bottle collection in the wardrobe, we wandered the short path to the beach. It was that soft, early-evening light Northumberland does so well, the sky streaked pink and the sand still warm underfoot. The children raced ahead collecting bits of driftwood while we ambled behind, shoes in hand, listening to the gentle hush of small waves. No dramatic cliffs or sweeping vistas, just miles of empty shoreline and the occasional black-headed gull giving us the eye.

Back at the cottage the evening was simple: fish fingers from the Co-op in Alnmouth, a quick game of Uno, and the wood-burner crackling while the youngest fell asleep on the sofa mid-story. I caught myself watching them and realised how rarely we manage this kind of unhurried togetherness at home. There’s something about the quiet rhythm here—the tide coming in, the kettle on, the low murmur of the fridge—that nudges you to slow down whether you planned to or not.

Later, brushing sand off the doormat, I thought about the sat-nav mishap and how it had set the tone for everything since. Sometimes the best bits of a holiday aren’t the grand plans but the moments when things wobble slightly and you end up exactly where you needed to be.
