About Northumberland
The cottage sits right on the edge of the dunes, the sort of place where you can step out the back door and be on the sand in thirty seconds. The journey had left us expecting something tired and windswept, but the first thing that struck me was how calm it felt. Pale wooden cladding caught the low afternoon light, and the wide windows looked straight out to a stretch of North Sea that was behaving itself for once, all soft pewter and gentle breakers. A driftwood bench stood by the gate with two empty mugs already waiting, as though the owners knew exactly how the drive would end. Inside, the space felt bigger than the photos suggested. The living room opens straight onto a little deck that catches the last of the sun, and the kitchen smelled faintly of fresh coffee someone had left on a timer. We dropped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and wandered through like first-time visitors rather than paying guests. Every room had a view: the bedroom framed the dunes perfectly, while the bathroom window gave an uninterrupted line to the horizon. I caught myself pausing in the doorway, suddenly aware that I’d spent the whole journey worrying about sat-nav mishaps and wet socks when the real treat was simply arriving somewhere quiet enough to notice the light changing. We wandered down to the beach before unpacking properly. The tide was out, leaving a wide sweep of firm sand perfect for an aimless stroll. A few dog-walkers nodded hello, and the only sound was the soft rush of water and the occasional cry of a gull. Standing there, shoes in hand, I realised how rarely we manage to slow down like this. The muddy detour and the soggy boots suddenly felt like part of the story rather than an inconvenience, a reminder that sometimes the best bits happen after the plans go slightly wrong. |
