We’d barely left Berwick station when the satnav decided to send us down a single-track lane that narrowed with every hedgerow, and by the time we spotted the turning for Wonderland I was convinced the boot was going to scrape both sides at once. A sudden lurch forward told me I’d clipped the verge; seconds later the front wheel sank into soft sand that had blown across the tarmac, and there we sat, half on the road and half in a dune, laughing like a pair of idiots while a curious sheep watched from the fence.

Once we’d dug ourselves out with the help of an obliging neighbour and a garden spade, the cottage itself felt like an apology: bright, airy rooms smelling faintly of sea salt and toast, and a kitchen window that framed nothing but dunes and the glint of the North Sea. We dumped our bags, swapped trainers for walking boots, and stepped straight onto the coastal path that runs past the garden gate.

The plan had been a proper day’s yomp to the lighthouse and back, but within half an hour the sky had turned that particular Northumberland grey that promises rain without ever quite delivering it. We pressed on anyway, coats zipped, cheeks stinging with salt, until the first fat drops sent us scurrying into the shelter of an old pillbox. Sitting on the concrete step, sharing a slightly squashed flapjack, I realised how rarely we slow down like this—just us, the sound of waves, and nothing on the calendar except “be back before dark.”

When the shower passed we turned inland along the dunes, following rabbit tracks through the marram grass until we reached a sheltered hollow where the sand was still warm. We kicked off our boots, spread the damp coats like picnic blankets, and watched oystercatchers skitter along the shoreline. Every so often a proper burst of sunshine broke through, turning the wet sand mirror-bright and making us squint like tourists who’d forgotten their sunglasses.

By late afternoon the clouds had cleared enough for a gentler wander back along the tideline, collecting tiny shells and laughing at the Labrador who kept presenting us with driftwood as though it were treasure. The cottage welcomed us with the smell of drying socks on the radiator and a kettle that whistled almost before we’d asked. Sitting on the little deck with mugs of tea, toes still sandy, I caught myself thinking how close we’d come to cancelling the whole trip over a forecast; instead the weather had simply nudged us into a slower rhythm, one foot in front of the other, and somehow that felt like the real point of being here.
