Exploring Northumberland
The owners, a lovely couple called Pat and Geoff, are there to greet me with keys in hand and a thermos of tea, but in my haste to unload the boot, I drop my fancy reusable water bottle straight into a flowerbed. It rolls under the car, forcing a muddy crawl to retrieve it – cue first impression of the guest looking like a drowned rat before I've even crossed the threshold. Chuckling to themselves (probably thinking "city folk"), they point out the electric bollard by the gate that I'd already clipped with my wing mirror. "No harm done, love," Pat says with that classic Northumberland warmth. I slink inside, apologising profusely, only to discover I've left the cool bag of picnic bits in the car. Chaos level: expert. But oh, stepping through that low-beamed doorway? Pure magic. The cottage smells of fresh linen and woodsmoke from the Aga, with flagged stone floors that scream proper country charm. It's one of those self-catering gems you find on those posh rental sites – think exposed beams, a squishy velvet sofa by a wood-burner that's already crackling away (Geoff must've lit it as a welcome), and a kitchen stocked with local treats: a loaf of sourdough from Alnwick's bakery, a jar of Lindisfarne mead, and even a bottle of something fizzy from the Northumberland vineyards. I flop onto the sofa with a cuppa, gazing out the sash windows at the rolling fields leading down to the sea. Embleton's just a stroll away, and there it is – the North Sea crashing against golden dunes, with Dunstanburgh Castle's ruins brooding on the horizon like a scene from a Poldark episode. No filter needed; it's Northumberland at its postcard finest. As the sun dips low (we're talking that endless summer evening light up here), I venture out for a proper gander. The garden's a riot of wildflowers and lavender, with a hammock strung between apple trees that's begging for a snooze. I spot a family of rabbits nibbling at the edges, and in the distance, the lowing of cattle from nearby farms. It's so quintessentially Northumbrian – rugged, unpretentious, and utterly restorative. Reflecting back on that drive, I have a quiet chuckle at myself: always the one packing too much (did I really need three jumpers for a July break?), rushing about like a headless chicken. But arriving here, mishaps and all, reminds me why I love these getaways. It's the antidote to emails and errands; just you, the wind off the coast, and space to breathe. By evening, I've rustled up a simple supper of smoked kippers from Craster (grabbed from a roadside honesty box on the way – genius) with crusty bread and a cheeky glass of that mead. Sat on the patio as the sky turns pink over the Cheviots, I toast to small disasters turning into the best stories. Northumberland's got me hooked – chaotic arrival be damned, this cottage feels like coming home. Can't wait to explore the beaches tomorrow, but for now, this first taste? Absolute bliss. |
